Previously on Sporked, we brought you the exciting news of a new flavor drop from Vernors—a rarity for the Michigan-based brand. Vernors Boston Cooler is a creamy vanilla and ginger soda that is meant to taste like a Boston cooler float—vanilla ice cream and ginger ale—a popular Michigan treat.

Per Keurig Dr. Pepper, Vernors Boston Cooler is only available in Michigan and parts of Ohio. I don’t get to say this very often, but this is one of those exceedingly rare times when living in Northwest Ohio has its perks, because I was able to stroll on down to my local Meijer and find it! But how is it? And is it worth a trip to Michigan? Let’s find out!

New Vernors Flavor!

Vernors Boston Cooler Review

Pros: Vernors certainly delivers on the promise of a ginger ale vanilla ice cream float. Imagine cream soda mixed with Vernors ginger ale. The ice cream flavor notes are incredibly subtle but add a nice layer of decadence. It’s a really solid dessert-y flavor.

Cons: I drank around half of a 12oz can and thought to myself, “That’s enough.” I’d love to see this in a 7.5oz mini can. While I think Vernors Boston Cooler has a really great flavor, I’m not to pair with it. And I certainly can’t see myself consuming a full 12oz can—and certainly not a 20oz bottle.

Verdict: If you’re a fan of cream soda and you’re a fan of ginger ale, I don’t think you’re going to be disappointed. Boston Cooler is a very fun homage to a bit of Michigan history and I do think it’s worth seeking out, particularly if you’re a fan of the brand. That said, I wish they made mini cans so I could actually finish one.
