Any day we get to tell you about a new soda is a good day on my watch and today we’re talking about a brand not discussed too often here on Sporked: Vernor’s Ginger Ale! For those not in the know, Vernor’s has been sold for nearly 160 years, originally created by a pharmacist in Detroit. And it has a bit of a cult following in the Midwest.

While Vernor’s isn’t typically known for dropping new flavors, the brand released a black cherry flavor exclusive to Michigan and Toledo, OH in the last several years, and has now announced a brand new flavor: Vernor’s Boston Cooler.

What is Boston Cooler?

The Boston Cooler float is a Michigan tradition that dates back to the late 1800s. It’s Vernor’s Ginger Ale poured over one or two scoops of vanilla ice cream. As our own Gwynedd Stuart noted in Sporked’s best ginger ale ranking, Vernor’s slightly less sweet flavor profile makes it a perfect base for an ice cream float.

As for why it’s called a “Boston” Cooler, Keurig Dr Pepper tells me there are a few theories. Some say that it is a reference to Boston Blvd in Detroit while others say that it was a marketing tactic. “Boston” sounded more exciting than “Detroit.” Others claim it was once a catch-all term for any soda-and-ice-cream combo

What is Vernor’s Boston Cooler soda?

According to Keurig Dr Pepper, “Vernor’s Boston Cooler blends the signature sweet and slightly zesty ginger flavors with smooth vanilla creaminess to capture the essence of Michigan’s iconic Boston Cooler float.”

Where can I find this new Vernor’s flavor?

In a potentially cruel and fascinating twist of events, Vernor’s Boston Cooler will not be sold in Boston, MA. Much like the previously released Vernor’s Black Cherry, Vernor’s Boston Cooler will be available in Michigan and the Toledo, OH area starting later this month in 12 packs, 20oz bottles, and 2L bottles.

Can I get Vernor’s Boston Cooler soda in zero sugar?

I have a sinking suspicion that you know the answer to this one: No. Sorry, pal. Full sugar only.

What does Vernor’s Boston Cooler soda taste like?

While I have not personally tried Vernor’s Boston Cooler yet, I am happy to report that being in the Toledo, OH metro area I will absolutely be able to hunt this one down. If you are interested in seeing a review for this one, be sure to let us know in the comments!
