We’ve got a mystery on our hands, gang. There I was, walking into Walmart for Breakfast Essentials shakes, when I found some suspicious looking cookies. Walmart’s new mystery flavor cookies are topped with an eye-catching swirl of purple and green icing and sprinkles. I had to get down to the truth of these cookies, so I snagged a pack to review here on Sporked. Let’s find out what secrets Walmart is hiding in their baked goods…

Note: I will be spoiling the “official” flavor in the next section; if you want to try these for yourself without that knowledge, this would be a good time to click away! Preferably on an ad or a different article of mine.

Mystery Flavored Cookies!

Walmart Mystery Flavor Frosted Sugar Cookies Review

Pros: Everyone who’s tried one of these mystery cookies has basically gotten it right on their first guess, which is a testament to accuracy if nothing else. The apple flavor is super obvious, even if I wish the flavor was caramel apple rather than the Jolly Rancher-esque sour apple it actually is.

Cons: First, the mystery flavor was spoiled for me almost immediately (more on that below). Secondly, I’ve never been a fan of Lofthouse-style cookies; they make me feel like I’m eating concrete powder. The sour apple flavor doesn’t add anything to that mouthfeel; if anything, it’s just making the whole experience even more disparate. No one I offered a cookie to was interested in a second one. If that’s not damning, I don’t know what is.

How was the mystery spoiled so quickly?

These mystery flavor cookies were a mystery for less than a minute. The exact wording on the label is “Mystery Flavor** Frosted Sugar Cookies.” Those asterisks had me wondering whether the flavor was revealed anywhere on the packaging, so I looked at the underside of the pack and there it was! “SOUR APPLE, ARTIFICIALLY FLAVORED” right at the bottom of the nutritional facts. Walmart is not out here crafting amazing escape room experiences.

What’s going on with Walmart’s bakery section these days?

Y’all, these mystery cookies are barely cracking the top ten most interesting things I’ve found in Walmart’s bakery section recently. If you’ve stepped into Walmart’s bakery this summer, you’ve probably noticed a new subgenre of baked goods: beverage-flavored treats. There are Dr Pepper, Orange Crush, A&W Root Beer, and Hawaiian Punch Fruity Juicy Red flavored mini cupcakes, cake bites, and bundt cakes! I tried the Dr Pepper options and let me tell you, those are good.
