When I think about roaming the aisles of Costco―no list, just aimlessly wandering to see what sounds good―I am hit with a couple of realizations. Firstly, never go to Costco to wander aimlessly unless you enjoy feeling overwhelmed and panicked. And second, Costco has the most insane array of random stuff. At any given time you can walk into Costco and find at least one thing that you’ve never before seen. From niche Norwegian cheeses to strange sauces you’ve never heard of, Costco seems to have it all―even if it doesn’t make any sense.

Well, there’s a new Costco item that fits this pattern of unpredictability perfectly. And truly, dear reader, I can’t emphasize enough how odd I find it to be sold at Costco. Namely, Costco is a wholesale company. So a 5-pack of a snack seems pretty standard… especially when the same box can be found at 5 Below for (you guessed it) less than five dollars. Furthermore, the product itself is perplexing. It’s not banana bread, it’s Bread Banana. “What does that even mean?” I hear you ask through the screen. Basically, it’s bread flavored, shaped, and colored to resemble a banana. It is not a loaf of bread made with bananas like its traditional counterpart.

Let’s Break It Down

Bread Banana has been spotted at Costco recently for around $10. It resembles the Tokyo Bananas that have gone viral, but this Costco version is produced out of China. It’s made from a soft, spongy bread that is filled with yellow banana cream and colored on the exterior a bright yellow.

Online reviews on Reddit compare its texture and taste to a banana-flavored Twinkie. Except, this version is about the size of four Twinkies combined and I’m not sure you could use that descriptor to convince a Twinkie lover to try out the unique looking treat. Especially since reviewers on YouTube and on Instagram contradict that description by saying that despite its appearance being Twinkie-like, it really tastes more like a cylinder of WonderBread with banana cream stuffed down the middle―it’s more bready than cakey.

As far as a novelty item goes, this one seems to have pretty good reviews. But that doesn’t mean it’s a necessary purchase from your next trip to Costco. More than anything, I think that this item would make a good novelty/gag gift to someone in your life that’s fond of banana-flavored treats. It’ll certainly be unexpected, at least. Or, if you’re an American coming off of your vacation to Japan and want to keep the party going, the Bread Banana is here for you, too.
