We Tried The New Costco Shortbread Cookies

Anytime something new comes to the Costco bakery section, it’s an immediate understanding for us here at Sporked that we have to try it out. Whether it’s our new favorite thing in the store or just okay, we have to get our hands on it and get to the bottom of if it’s any good. And, of course, a huge part of that is informing our dear readers of whether or not it’s worth their money as well.

For these Shortbread with Belgian Milk Chocolate, that is especially true since they are $13.99 for a box of them. We wouldn’t want you wasting your money, so we went out and got some to try. So without further ado, here is our official Sporked review. 

Our Official Thoughts

Pros — To me, I consider shortbread cookies a very hit or miss dessert. If there’s not enough butter in them then they end up just tasting like a basic sugar cookie, and if they are too dry then it’s just an overall unpleasant experience. Luckily, these cookies didn’t fall into any of those categories and far exceeded our expectations. And, when shortbread are executed well (as these are) they become a truly standout dessert. I mean, we should know by now that the Costco bakery section has their recipes on lock, but we were thoroughly impressed with what these brought to the table.

Not only is the texture tender and delicate, but they don’t at all rely on being underbaked to do so. Additionally, the real butter flavor is front and center with these cookies, and we really appreciate that especially as we head into the holiday season. Better yet, breaking up that rich, buttery flavor is smooth, luscious, high-quality Belgian chocolate making these cookies into the epitome of decadence.

Cons — I know it’s kind of the point of Costco to offer goods at a high volume for an affordable price, but with these cookies I feel like that is really an unnecessary trait. The 15 cookies you get in a box feels excessive and like the flavor would quickly become mundane rather than as enjoyable as the first couple bites are. If anything, I think they would be an excellent addition to a variety pack rather than all on their own. But, if you think you would like these cookies and have a reason to buy that many of them, then I would highly recommend it.
