Other than in the case of Trader Joe’s, Takis have kind of gone untested in their competition up until now. They’re pretty unique and a one of a kind snack, especially in form factor. The intentionally rolled tortilla chip, drowned in spices and seasoning is iconic. So iconic, in fact, that you would think that other companies would have tried to hop on that bandwagon after seeing the success Takis has had in the American market.

And, now, Doritos has done just that. They released their own variety of Takis, going by different name: Doritos Dinamita Chile Limon. But the flavor and shape inspiration follows Takis. In addition to the the launch of this new kind of Dorito, the company took this opportunity to address one of the primary critiques that Takis are often given by releasing an original version and a dye-free version. Naturally, we knew we’d have to try them out and let our readers know what’s up with this new release.
Our Honest Thoughts
Overall, it’s honestly quite remarkable how similar the flavor of these are to Takis. They’re spicy and warm and have that sharp, lime-y citric acid flavor. They’re perfectly salty and they scratched that spicy itch perfectly. Isolating the spice element, you can really tell that these are a little bit spicier than Takis. I would even say that the texture is better than Takis as well. They’re sturdier and less crumbly, yet not too rough on the roof of your mouth.
The strange thing about these two new releases is the difference between the dye-free flavor and the red-dyed flavor. Honestly, I didn’t really expect there to be a difference and there wasn’t a super dramatic one by any means. But blindfolded, you could still taste which ones were red. Personally, I think they tasted just slightly better.
The red-dyed flavor tasted distinctly warmer on the palate, yet the spice level was maintained between the two flavors. In the dye-free version, it really let the lime flavor shine a bit more too. Really though, they were equally satisfying. I’d probably even choose these over Takis as a result of their option for a dye-free version since it’s less of a mess.
