Alright guys, the time is now for us to break down what’s really going on with the new, absurdly colorful refreshers now available at Starbucks. The Starbucks Butterfly Refreshers have been taking over my Instagram feed with its celebrity endorsement from Khloé Kardashian and its loud colors. And frankly, I’ve had enough! Something about the mango-pineapple popping boba in it has peaked my curiosity… it calls to me saying, “I’m so delicious and refreshing!” Well now, I can’t hold back my restraint any longer. I needed to try it to see if these are any good or if Starbucks’ marketing for this drink has actually just worked too well on me.

What’s In It?
Starbucks said in its press release that the menu item is made up of layers of guava and passionfruit refresher that is shaken with lemonade and topped with a butterfly pea flower infusion. The butterfly flower not only gives the drink its name, but it also gives it that distinctly bold purple color that defines the drink visually. It all sits on top a layer of mango-pineapple popping boba and ice. It’s not only beautiful, but it sounds tropical, refreshing―and most of all, fun!
Is The Drink Any Good?
Here’s the thing, going into this taste test I definitely expected to taste way more from the distinct flavors described in the drink’s profile. But when I set that preconception aside, I was actually able to take note of how nice this drink was. It’s (very surprisingly) not too sweet. The flavor is distinctly tropical, very pleasant, and there’s no weirdness from the butterfly pea flower. But all mixed together, I can’t say I was able to pinpoint the exact flavors. That is, aside from the popping boba.
The popping boba had a great texture and the flavor was lovely and bold. It did have a slightly artificial taste, but I happily had every last pearl. Overall, I enjoyed the drink! I don’t know if I would go to out of my way to make a Starbucks trip just to get this drink again, but I would consider getting it if I was in need of a boba fix or wanted something extra fun from Starbucks.
