When we first endeavored to find the best canned Margarita, most of the entrants didn’t actually taste like a classic Margarita. We still managed to find some good canned Margaritas—they just happened to be fizzy, for the most part. But for our most recent update we tried a bunch of new or newish Margarita cans and found a whole world of Margaritas in a can that really taste like Margaritas!

What we look for in the best canned Margarita:

  • Tequila flavor. A Margarita needs to taste like tequila! Otherwise it’s just sweet citrus juice.
  • Lime flavor. Ideally, we’re looking for canned Margaritas that taste like they were made with fresh lime. It’s a lot to ask, but some brands managed!
  • Not too much triple sec. In our most recent canned Margarita taste test we tried one Margarita in a can that tasted like straight up orange blossom water. Too much triple sec will absolutely ruin a Margarita.

If you’re just looking for a good canned cocktail, we have you covered on a different page. But if you’re looking for the best Margarita in a can, you’ve come to the right place. Here are the best canned Margaritas you can buy.

(Looking for the best Margarita mix so you can make your own Margaritas at home? We ranked those, too.)

Casamigos Margarita

Best “Skinny” Canned Margarita

Casamigos Margarita

Casamigos (George Clooney’s former tequila brand) now makes mixed packs of mini canned Margs. Each 8-can variety pack contains a mix of Classic Lime, Guava & Hibiscus, Passion Fruit & Prickly Pear, and Strawberry & Colima Lime Margaritas. The flavored ones are good—but they’re not super Margarita-y. The Classic Lime, however, does taste like a Margarita—a very specific type of Margarita. It tastes kinda like a Skinny Margarita, which is made with lime juice, tequila, and just a touch of agave syrup. It’s really not very sweet at all. If you want a more subtle Margarita or are used to Skinny Margs, this is the best canned Margarita to buy.

cazadores canned margarita

Best Sparkling Canned Margarita

Cazadores Margarita

It’s fizzy, it’s zesty, it’s limey—it’s like Margarita soda. Cazadores makes a great canned tequila cocktail—we particularly love their Palomas—and the classic Marg is no exception. This is easy drinking and refreshing. You could stock a cooler full of these if you’re hosting a BBQ and everyone would be totally happy with your decision. It doesn’t have the most tequila-forward flavor, though, so if you’re looking for a Margarita in a can that really tastes like a couple of shots of tequila, this isn’t the best canned Margarita for you.

Pool Days margarita

Best Tart Canned Margarita

Pool Days Margarita

First of all, this is great branding. The can looks so appealing. It really taps into that Palm Springs hotel pool vibe. It’s also 12% ABV, which makes it the perfect balance of boozy and chuggable. Flavorwise, this is definitely the tartest canned Marg we tried. It tastes like fresh lime juice with a heavy splash of tequila and just a dash triple sec. I’d pour this over ice to mellow it out just a bit. But it’s still super tasty and the best canned Margarita if you like to go heavy on the lime.

Golden Rule Margarita

Best Strong Canned Margarita

Golden Rule Margarita

This canned Margarita smells so much like straight tequila, I was afraid to take a sip. But upon tasting my nerves were eased (and not just by the alcohol). This tiny canned Margarita is balanced—limey and just sweet enough. But it definitely leans hard on the tequila. This is a grow-hair-on-your-chest sort of canned Margarita. It may be small, but it’s powerful (27% ABV!). And it’s the best premade Margarita in a can you can buy.

Cutwater Lime Margarita

Best of the Best

Cutwater Lime Margarita

I can’t prove it, but I think Cutwater has improved upon its canned Margarita recipe. When I first tasted the brand’s classic Lime Margarita a couple of years ago, I thought it was good but not great—too sweet. But my most recent experience with it has changed my mind. It goes heavy on the tequila, and that’s what I want in a canned Margarita. I want to know there’s actual booze in my canned cocktail! And it’s good tequila! Earthy and vegetal in that agave-forward way. The lime flavor is bright and zesty, and there’s just enough triple sec in the mix to sweeten things up. This is an extremely drinkable canned Margarita. And, lucky for you, it’s also an extremely available canned Margarita. Buy it!

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
