The Best Chocolate Covered Strawberries to Buy for Cheap

I don’t know why chocolate covered strawberries cost so much money. If you order them as a gift for someone, you’re probably going to pay close to $50 for, like, six strawberries. (And there’s no guarantee they’ll even taste good!) But you don’t have to pay that much to enjoy that classic combo of thin, crackling chocolate and juicy, tangy strawberry. You could make them yourself at home for less than $10 with a container of strawberries and some melted chocolate (we ranked the best chocolate for dipping strawberries to help you out there). Or, if DIY isn’t your style, we also tasted seven different chocolate covered strawberries from the grocery store and online in order to find the best chocolate covered strawberries that won’t break the bank.

We gave ourselves a budget of $30 for each brand, but the best chocolate dipped strawberries were actually way, way cheaper than that. (In fact, the worst chocolate strawberries we tasted were the most expensive!) After tasting not only chocolate covered fresh strawberries, but also frozen chocolate strawberries and chocolate covered freeze dried strawberries, I am here to help save you money (and save your loved ones from waxy chocolate and flavorless strawberries). Here are the best strawberries dipped in chocolate to buy.

Favorite Day Freeze Dried Strawberries Dipped in Dark Chocolate

If you’re looking for the best chocolate covered strawberries for snacking, allow me to introduce you to room temp-friendly chocolate covered freeze dried strawberries. I didn’t know these crunchy treats existed until this taste test. But I am pleased to know them now. We tried a couple different brands, but Target’s Favorite Day took the title of tastiest freeze dried strawberries covered in chocolate. They’re big, strawberry-shaped chunks of thick dark chocolate surrounding thick freeze dried strawberries. The chocolate is fine—it tastes like decent dark chocolate—but the strawberries are what really make this snack something special. They’re so tangy and zippy, and they dissolve in your mouth in such a uniquely delightful way. Being an adult can be really boring, but sometimes a fun snack comes along and really captures your imagination. When it comes to having work-appropriate mouth fun, these chocolate covered freeze dried strawberries are as close as you can get to Pop Rocks without verging into candy territory.

Sprouts Dark Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Best Dark Chocolate

Sprouts Dark Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Sprouts’ frozen chocolate covered strawberries do come in a box—so I guess you could wrap it—but they are frozen so they’re really not appropriate to give as a gift. But these little pieces of frozen chocolate covered strawberries are perfect for snacking, sprinkling on ice cream, or even stirring into yogurt for a very exciting Valentine’s Day breakfast (as mentioned above, being an adult can be boring, so you really gotta do whatever you can to have a little bit of fun). The chocolate is thin and crackly and bittersweet. The strawberries are tangy and very frozen (sensitive teeth need not apply). If you’re looking for the best chocolate covered strawberry to add to something else, Sprouts has you covered.

Tru Fru Frozen Fresh in White & Milk Chocolate

Best of the Best

Tru Fru Frozen Fresh in White & Milk Chocolate

The best chocolate covered strawberries we tried didn’t come in a fancy box. They came in a bag. And they didn’t cost $30. They cost $7. Seriously, what these frozen chocolate covered strawberries lack in presentation they make up for in flavor. Tru Fru’s big frozen strawberry halves are covered in a thin coating of white and milk chocolate, which holds its form until it hits your tongue. The strawberry halves aren’t quite as frozen as the Sprouts pieces, so they’re easier to eat. And the strawberry itself almost tastes like strawberry sorbet. While you probably shouldn’t give a plastic bag of frozen chocolate strawberries to someone, you definitely could and should place these chocolate-covered treats onto a plate for a romantic date night dessert. Save your money. Skip the mail order chocolate covered strawberries. These are the best chocolate covered strawberries to buy.
