So much news came out of this year’s National Association of Convenience Stores Expo. I’ve been scrambling to cover every soda and energy drink revealed at the event, which is why I totally missed a major announcement that came the day before the show. Gatorade is launching a brand-new “Lower Sugar” line and, as part of that line, reviving a discontinued flavor.

What’s the difference between Lower Sugar and G2?

Exactly 25%! The existing G2 line features all the electrolytes of Gatorade’s classic Thirst Quencher line with half the sugar. The new Lower Sugar line features no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners and 75% less sugar than the Thirst Quencher line. Gatorade hasn’t revealed whether Lower Sugar will feature the same electrolyte content as G2 or Thirst Quencher, but I expect it’ll be close at least. While Gatorade hasn’t made a formal statement regarding the future of G2, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lower Sugar line eventually replaces G2 entirely.

Which Gatorade flavor is returning in this new line?

The Lower Sugar line is launching with four flavors: Fruit Punch, Lemonade, Glacier Cherry (my GGOAT), and Rain Berry. Previously available in Gatorade Thirst Quencher’s Frost subline, this purple drink was discontinued back in 2023. In case anyone else was confused by the name, “Rain Berry” started as a plain old berry flavor in Gatorade’s old Rain subline. When the Rain subline was discontinued, select flavors were moved into the Frost subline with the word “rain” added to the flavor name for continuity. How silly!

When will Gatorade Lower Sugar hit shelves?

Rain Berry fans won’t have to wait long to get their hands on their precious purple Gatorade; the Lower Sugar line will hit shelves in Spring 2026. All four flavors will be available in 12oz, 20oz, and 28oz bottles, meaning you’ll be able to find the perfect Lower Sugar Gatorade for you, no matter the size of your lunchbox. I was lucky enough to try the returning Rain Berry at a secret underground invite-only PepsiCo party (not kidding); stay tuned for a full review closer to next year’s release date.
