7 Best Hershey Bars, Ranked from Good to Great

Hershey’s chocolate gets a bad rap. I’ll be totally honest, if someone offers me a plain Hershey’s Kiss, I’m probably turning it down. It’s super sweet. A little bit chalky, perhaps. But even in the era of affordable and easily accessible artisanal chocolate, I gotta say, there’s a time and a place for a Hershey bar—especially if you’re making s’mores. A classic Hershey’s bar is thin. It’s snappy. It’s nostalgia in a brown wrapper. But the brand you thought you outgrew when you stopped coveting literally anything sweet and chocolatey has a lot more going on than plain bars.

I shopped for every Hershey’s bar I could find—from Hershey’s Symphony to Mr. Goodbar—to find the Hershey bars that will make anyone reconsider the virtues of that scrappy Pennsylvania candy company we know and love. These are the best Hershey bars, according to our taste testers.

Hershey’s!

Hershey’s Special Dark

It’s interesting to me that this Hershey bar specifically says “mildly sweet” on the label because this stuff is SWEET. Sure, I guess it’s less sweet than a milk chocolate Hershey bar, but it’s definitely gonna put some pep in your step at 3 p.m. It still has that richer, deeper, slightly more bitter cocoa flavor than a regular Hershey’s bar—we were all pretty impressed.

Hershey’s!

Hershey’s Extra Creamy Milk Chocolate with Waffle Cone Pieces

I had to go to a few stores to find this Hershey’s bar, and I’m glad I put in the extra effort. If a Hershey’s bar says “extra creamy” on the label, it really makes a difference. It’s not, like, Cadbury creamy, but it definitely melts in your mouth in a nice way. The bits in this bar don’t necessarily have the taste or texture of waffle cone bits, BUT in the absence of Krackle (I couldn’t find a Krackle bar anywhere), this seems to be Hershey’s take on Crunch. And it’s GOOD. If the waffle cone experience were more accurate, it would rank higher, but it’s still one of the best Hershey bars in my book.

mr goodbar review

Hershey’s!

Hershey’s Mr. Goodbar

I bought this Mr. Goodbar as a full-size chocolate bar, and I gotta say, it might be the first time I’ve ever had Mr. Goodbar that didn’t come in a bag of Hershey’s Miniatures. It’s just about as good as you remember in full-size format. There are LOTS of crunchy peanut bits in the mix and while I think it would be slightly more delicious were it made with the chocolate Hershey’s labels as “extra creamy,” it’s a classic that holds up.

hershey's symphony review

Hershey’s

Hershey’s Symphony Extra Creamy Milk Chocolate with Almonds & Toffee

Symphony bars are SO FANCY and I LOVE to treat myself, but with all the other chocolate bar options out there, it had never occurred to me to pick up one of these puppies. That changes today. This Symphony bar with extra creamy milk chocolate, almonds, and toffee is the one I brought home. The chocolate tastes familiar but just a little bit elevated, and the nuts and toffee add a wonderful bit of crunch. It’s thin. It’s snappy. It’s as luxurious as it looks.

Hershey’s!

Hershey’s Milk Chocolate

Do I like Hershey’s milk chocolate more than I remember? Yes. Would I ever buy a plain Hershey’s milk chocolate bar to eat on its own? Nope. BUT this one ranks high because it’s a classic AND because it’s still the best chocolate bar to use for s’mores. It’s so thin. It’s exactly the correct amount of chocolate to pair with a couple of graham crackers and a gooey marshmallow. There’s a time and a place for a plain ol’ Hershey’s bar, and I’m glad they still exist for that reason.

hershey's cookies & creme review

Hershey’s!

Hershey’s Cookies & Creme

If you’re a white chocolate skeptic, I need you to take a bite of a Hershey’s Cookies & Creme bar and then tell me to my face you don’t like it. Go ahead. I’ll be here waiting. It’s the perfect cookies and cream confection—milky, sweet, creamy, and with LOTS of cocoa-laced cookie bits. If it’s been a while since you’ve had one of these, I can’t recommend it enough.

hershey's bar with whole almonds

Best Hershey Bar

Hershey’s Milk Chocolate with Whole Almonds

This is such a “mom” chocolate bar to me and, hey, sometimes moms know best. The combo of Hershey’s milk chocolate and roasty-toasty whole almonds is nostalgic and transcendent. This bar is slightly thicker than a regular Hershey’s bar, but it still feels light and snappy. And even if you look at the bottom of the bar and you’re like, hey, where are all the almonds…they’re there. There’s almonds in every bite. DO NOT buy the bigger bar with almond bits. Buy the smaller one with whole almonds. It’s the best Hershey’s bar…whether or not you’ve given birth to children.

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
