Today, I’ve got two unique Oreo flavors from China to review. Unique is actually an understatement. These Oreos are based on flowers and sesame. The shrine-themed packaging for these limited edition Oreos are absolutely gorgeous; let’s hope the flavors inside are just as lovely.

Chinese Creamy Peony Oreos

New Chinese Oreos!

Chinese Creamy Peony Oreos

Pros: These cookies feel so luxe and different from any Oreos we have on shelves in America; these even stand apart from the Cherry Blossom Matcha Oreos I reviewed earlier this year. As with many of the international products I’ve eaten before, the flavor is comparably subtle (despite being baked into both the cookies and the creme); these aren’t punching you in the face like an American Oreo. While that can make some international Oreos underwhelming as a whole, I don’t think I’d want a strong flavor from a floral Oreo—this is just right. If you like the Japanese Cherry Blossom scent from Bath and Body Works, you’d absolutely love these cookies.

Cons: If you’re used to an American serving size of creme filling between your Oreo wafers, these will disappoint. You get somewhere between Oreo Thins and standard Oreos.

Chinese Sesame Milk Oreos

New Chinese Oreos!

Chinese Sesame Milk Oreos

Pros: Per my research, these Oreos are based on a popular Chinese dessert called Tang Yuan: mochi-esque rice balls filled with black sesame paste, often served with a brown sugar syrup. I’ve never had Tang Yuan, so I went in comparatively blind to what they’re aiming for. Did I mention these cookies are super cute? The Peony ones all have a floral design on one side, while these Sesame Milk cookies feature multiple culturally inspired designs. In the flavor department, these are also distinctly subtle…

Cons: …and it’s still too much. Oh man, I think I’d be dead if these were American-strength. While my girlfriend was a fan of the nutty, toasted vibe in both aroma and taste, this is not a flavor combination for me. Sesame should not be the strongest flavor note in an Oreo creme, especially when the secondary notes bring cheese to mind. Call me crazy, but Oreo should not get involved with anything that even remotely resembles cheese. Maybe this is payback for Ritz selling cracker sandwiches filled with chocolate creme in Japan. (I’ve got a pack of those on the shelf too; let me know if I should write up a review.)
