Earlier this year, the Sporked office crew reviewed 19 different Dolly Parton products ranging from frozen dinners to baking mixes. Once I got over my raging jealousy, I discovered Dolly’s Sugar Cookie Mix topped the list—earning not just a 10/10, but the following accolade: “This baking mix produced the best sugar cookies any of us have ever had.” That’s no small feat! Dolly’s box mixes genuinely blow all the competitors away. (I’ve had my love for Dolly’s fudge brownie mix laid bare in my Sporked author bio for nearly two years now.)

Luckily, the universe took pity on me missing out on the big ranking. Within 24 hours of that post, Conagra was in my inbox offering me samples of Dolly’s new Holiday Sugar Cookie Mix. How will this seasonal variant match up to the supposedly perfect sugar cookie mix? There’s only one way to find out. Preheat the oven and grease the pan, folks, it’s time to bake.

Dolly Parton’s Holiday Sugar Cookie Mix with Holiday Sprinkles

Pros: As the crew laid out in their ranking, these sugar cookies are fantastic. First off, they’re easy; mixing the ingredients and turning the sticky results into ~18 healthy-sized cookies took the same amount of time it took for the oven to get up to temperature! The texture is perfect: crispy edges with a chewy center. There’s just one glaring problem…

Cons: These sprinkles are way too crunchy. With sugar cookies, the texture is half the battle, and these sprinkles botch the experience. Dolly isn’t using your standard Funfetti “all color, no substance” sprinkles; these are hard little sugar inclusions. Who wants festive aquarium pebbles in their sugar cookies? If you really want some Dollywood-style cheer in your life this season, use these Dolly-branded cookie cutters on Dolly’s standard Sugar Cookie Mix.

How did Dolly Parton become queen of the box mix?

I have no idea, but I hope she keeps it up. I remember when this line launched with just a few products in one small corner of the baking aisle. Dolly’s food line with Conagra now spans over twenty products when you include seasonal variants like the Caramel Sheet Cake Mix, Pumpkin Spice Cookie Mix, and the topic of today’s review. From frozen dinners and desserts to these fantastic box mixes, Dolly Parton is battling Betty Crocker herself for the throne.
