Damn, Cheez-It. I hope your flavor scientists got a big bonus and extra vacation last year, because the grind has not stopped. They’ve launched so many new Cheez-Its in January, we can barely keep up. We’ve got delicious gluten free Cheez-Its (HUGE win for the GF community, y’all), Cheez-Its Grooves Loaded Nachos, a new Ultimate Snack Mix (review coming soon), and the previously limited-release Cheez-It “Crunch” flavors now hitting stores nationwide. What more could we possibly want? Wait, do you hear that noise? It sounds… almost like… a snap?

Enter Cheez-It Snap’d Honey BBQ, the latest new Cheez-Its flavor to join the ultra-thin, ultra-crunchy Snap’d lineup. I got my hands on this (surprisingly) big bag. Here’s my perhaps-too-honest review.

Cheez-It Snap’d Honey BBQ

Pros: We’re big fans of the Snap’d chip around here. They have that satisfying sturdy crunch and extra toastiness that we love. They are different enough from the OG snack to really create their own niche in the market, and we hope to see more flavors from them flourish. And that’s about where my positive remarks end.

Cons: You know, it’s curious just how much this doesn’t work. I feel like I’m eating the equivalent of unmixed paint. The sweet honey, cheese, and smoky BBQ hit at different times, and somehow, despite knowing that those flavors should logically complement each other, the result is confusing and unpleasant. The honey is a bit too bright. I can’t tell if I want them to be cheesier or lose the cheese entirely, since it just doesn’t mesh with the sweetness. Considering how much we loved the other new Cheez-Its flavors, we can’t be that disappointed. One of them had to be bad. (Plus, there are better BBQ chips out there.)

Verdict: I see what they were going for, and while the idea of a Honey BBQ Cheez-It certainly appeals to me, something just went a little wonky here.

Howdy! I’m a Sporked writer based in L.A., and you can find me overstaying my welcome at just about any coffee shop with free wifi, no matter the speed. Sadly, I can never move back to my home state, Florida, because even if the seafood is totally unmatched, there aren’t enough Mediterranean or Korean restaurants to keep me sane.
