There was a time—and it wasn’t all that long ago—when if you wanted to add supplemental protein to your diet, you were pretty much limited to protein powder, protein shakes, and protein bars. Welp, those days are over, folks. Last year alone we saw the release of Protein Pop-TartsEggo protein pancakes and waffles, and a whole line of protein ice creams, too. The protein ice cream must’ve been a pretty buzzy product in packaged food circles because even more protein ice cream is hitting stores soon—and you’re probably already a fan of the brand. Yep, Blue Bell protein ice cream (ahem, frozen dessert) is hitting stores soon in a bunch of flavors.

What flavors of Blue Bell protein ice cream are we getting?

Blue Bell’s new line of protein-packed frozen dessert is hitting stores in five flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Coffee, and Salted Caramel. They’re all pretty standard, but it’s probably for the best that they’re keeping it simple (although, we wouldn’t turn down Buttered Pecan or Cookie Two Step protein ice cream).

How much protein is in the new Blue Bell protein ice creams?

As for protein content, there’s 35g in every pint, which is actually more protein than you’ll find in brands that preceded them. For instance, Protein Pints has 30g protein per pint. Much like Halo Top, these new Blue Bell protein ice creams seem like they’re designed to be consumed by the pint and you can do so without eating all your daily calories. These have between 310 and 340 calories per container.

Will Blue Bell protein ice cream be any good?

Historically, Blue Bell ice cream rules. One time, my colleague Ariana Losch bought nine tubs of the stuff (we can’t get it here in L.A., but she can get it when she’s visiting family in Florida), tasted them all, and ranked them from least good to most good. I’d normally say “from worst to best,” but none of them were bad; our lowest ranked flavor still earned 7 out of 10 Sporks—that’s really good!

BUT we’re talking about protein ice cream here. When we taste tested five flavors of Protein Pints ice cream last year, we gave them pretty glowing reviews, but we were definitely grading on a curve. Protein ice cream (or frozen dessert, as it were) can have a tendency to be a little grainy and just a little funny tasting. If you’re expecting this new protein ice cream to taste exactly like the Blue Bell ice cream you know and love, you’ll probably be let down. Adjust your expectations and you just might love it!

We’ll be trying it as soon as we can snag it in stores. When will that be? Well, that’s not totally clear. In an Instagram post that went up today, Blue Bell simply said it’s “coming soon.” Keep your protein-packed eyes peeled.

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
