We can all agree that Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddles are pretty great, right? That mix of savory and sweet with the syrup-soaked hot cakes, seasoned sausage, gooey cheese, and…perfunctory egg. Incredible. A real achievement for the McDonald’s R&D department.

But there are a couple of issues: First you have to actually go somewhere to get a McGriddles—namely, to a McDonald’s. Second, you have to go somewhere at a specific time. Typically, you can only score a McGriddles in the morning until 10:30 or 11 a.m. And third, they cost upwards of $5 (sometimes close to $6) for one sandwich.

We have a solution! After tasting through Jimmy Dean’s portfolio of frozen breakfast foods, we stumbled upon Jimmy Dean Frozen Maple Griddle Cake Sausage, Egg and Cheese sandwiches. And, my man, these will scratch that McGriddles itch and then some. The pancakes (made with real maple syrup) are squishy, the sausage is meaty and savory, the cheese is so gooey and holds everything together, and the egg….eggs just as it should.

For just about $7, you can score a box of four sweet and savory frozen breakfast sandwiches. That’s $1.75 a sandwich—so much cheaper than a McGriddles without even accounting for gas. And they’re available in your freezer whenever you damn please. You can have one at 2 p.m. You can have one at 2 a.m. You are in control of your McGriddles-esque sandwich consumption. And that’s priceless.

And if you’re gluten-free, check out Start Right Waffle Sliders Sausage & Cheese. There’s no egg, but you still get that savory sweet cheesy goodness without all that pesky gluten.

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
