If you shop for groceries at Target, you’re aware that the store has one of THE best cereal aisles. They consistently have the new, cool, and seasonal breakfast cereals from the big national brands before any other stores, and that’s in addition to what their proprietary brand Good & Gather stocks. But pretty soon, things could look different when you’re browsing for your next box of breakfast kibble for humans…

Target is doing away with synthetic colors in the cereal aisle—yep, all of them.

To align with what they say are changing customer demands, Target is updating its ENTIRE cereal inventory and will only stock cereals made without synthetic colors.

As Cara Sylvester, an executive VP at Target, put it: “We know consumers are increasingly prioritizing healthier lifestyles, and we’re moving quickly to evolve our offerings to meet their needs. Our new cereal assortment made without certified synthetic colors makes it easier for busy families to make choices they feel good about, and shows what it means to curate a great assortment and lead with merchandising authority.”

The change doesn’t just apply to Target’s own brands. According to a press release, the store actually worked with national brands to reformulate existing products, but they promise that flavor and quality won’t be compromised.

But…WHAT ABOUT MY FRUITY PEBBLES?

My favorite cereal is Fruity Pebbles. You know, the cereal with the most synthetic colors imaginable (namely, Red 40, Yellow 5 & 6, and Blue 1). It’s a true mosaic of vibrant, petroleum-based colors that couldn’t possibly be as delicious if it wasn’t so unnaturally bright—right?

Well, back in the spring of 2025, well before Target decided to nix dyes, the FDA announced plans to phase out eight artificial food dyes, arguing that they’re harmful to kids. So while Target may be the first retailer to lead the charge against dyes, it looks like change will be coming to the packaged food industry as a whole. Basically, be prepared for more muted colors in your box of Trix as the government pushes for a switch to natural food dyes like watermelon and beet juice.

How long do we have before the change takes full effect?

Target’s aiming to have the full makeover of the cereal aisle take place before the end of May. If you’re part of the “you can pry Red 40 from my cold dead hands” crowd, now’s the time to stock up!
