If you are blessed to have an H Mart within driving distance, first of all, how does it feel to be God’s favorite? Second, have you tried the Tokyo Banana yet? Kudos to you if you’ve spotted its beautiful, mellow yellow box next to the mochi and roll cakes and resisted. I personally do not have that kind of strength.

What…exactly…is a Tokyo Banana?

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT. Sorry. Too excited. I’ll use my inside voice. It’s not a literal banana, okay, but if you’ve ever visited or flown through Tokyo, you’ve probably encountered it. It’s one of Japan’s most iconic souvenir snacks (“omiyage”) and comes packaged in a lovely minimalist gift box. It’s basically a soft, banana-shaped sponge cake filled with sweet banana custard cream, kinda like a Japanese twinkie. One box comes with eight cakes.

While H Mart hasn’t made a huge formal announcement, the rollout seems to be a quiet, location-by-location drop, which I love. It’s like finding a rare Pokémon. Tokyo Banana cakes are available on Amazon, but one three pack costs (*ahem*) $95. At H Mart it seems to be priced at $13.99.

Anyways, maybe we’ll buy one of these and try them on camera. Stay tuned!

Howdy! I’m a Sporked writer based in L.A., and you can find me overstaying my welcome at just about any coffee shop with free wifi, no matter the speed. Sadly, I can never move back to my home state, Florida, because even if the seafood is totally unmatched, there aren’t enough Mediterranean or Korean restaurants to keep me sane.
