Fans Are Angry at Costco’s New Sourdough Bread Bowls

Is this why it’s not called “sweetdough?”

If you’re looking to devour some soup, it’s hard to go wrong with pouring into a nice thick sourdough bread bowl. And Costco knows that, as they recently moved into the sourdough market by offering a new sourdough bread kit. But if you don’t have the time (or patience) to make your own sourdough, the Costco bakery has also come up with a new batch of sourdough bread bowls that online shoppers aren’t reacting well to. Here’s what you need to know.

What are these bread bowls like?

According to the signs advertising them, these sourdough loafs have a “robust, sour flavor,” and are “hearth baked” and “hand scored.” They’re sold in bags of four for $7.99 that are 31 ozs each – just under 2 pounds. That means each each loaf contains around 7.75 ozs of bread, which makes them the perfect size for around 8 to 10 ozs of soup. (For comparison, a standard Campbell’s-sized can of soup is 10.2 ozs.)

Why are fans so angry?

When news of the sourdough bowls broke online, social media posts like this one were flooded with negative comments from fans.

One of the biggest complaints involved the list of ingredients, which many felt were too long. As one commenter put it, “Hard pass too may ingredients to be sourdough.” While another wrote, “That’s not sourdough, sourdough is only supposed to have flour, water, and salt. Nothing else.”

Others argued that these bowls didn’t have the right ingredients, writing, “It has yeast in it which means it’s not sourdough!” And another argued that, “Yeah, once you allow Costco to add another ingredient or do something with the recipe of sourdough opens a Pandora box, what next preservatives? Sourdough doesn’t need preservatives but Costco will probably do it. Give’m an inch they’ll take a mile… 👎🏾”

But not all of the complaints were about the recipe, some just thought they came out at the wrong time, writing, “Those would have been good in the winter for chili and soup.”
