Let it never be said that Spam is not a trailblazer. This canned meat could be so trad, so boring, so old-school – and yet, somehow, it’s become one of the trendiest foods around in the last few years, with Hormel (the company that makes it) leaning fully into its new, cool status. As a result, we’ve had all manner of new flavors, and a bunch of tie-in products to boot: Spam flip-flops? Spam gift boxes? You name it, they’ve made it.

Now, though, Hormel has done something that, in hindsight, is so clear that we can’t believe it’s taken this long. Introducing the Spam dog. It’s a Spam hot dog. And we want to try it immediately.

SPAM Dogs: That’s Your Summer Snacking Sorted

Hormel announced the Spam dog at the end of last week in a press release, saying that it “brings together two American culinary icons in one bold, unexpected bite.” According to the food giant, it combines the ease and delivery mechanism (tubular food, in a bun) of a hot dog with Spam flavors. Funnily enough, this isn’t the first time that Spam has made a hot dog – it previously brought one out in 2009, but that was way before the food had its resurgence, and so we expect this version to bring a touch of invigoration to the table, flavor-wise. Maybe not, though; maybe it’ll taste exactly the same.

The new Spam dog had a limited release in select markets, but now, it’s getting a wider rollout, debuting at the National Restaurant Association in Chicago. As you might expect, given Spam’s refreshed status as one of the more up-to-the-minute foods out there, Hormel is recommending a host of interesting flavor pairings for this one, including chipotle mayo, pineapple jalapeno salsa, and kimchi. Is anyone else hungry? ‘Cos I am.

Where Can I Find The New Spam Dog?

So, it actually looks as though this one isn’t yet available for purchase to cook at home at Walmart and Target. Instead, Hormel’s release focuses more on the catering and distributing side – and for customers, this means that it’ll be first available in ready-to-eat formats. Hormel states that it will be able to be found at Rutter’s convenience stores in the Northeast, further convenience stores elsewhere (including 7-Elevens in Hawaii), and at ballparks around the country. It might not be the biggest rollout at first, but the company expects the list of stockists to grow as time goes on.

So, until it arrives somewhere near you, you might have to wait for this one. Personally, we find all of this to be very exciting. Whatever will come next?!
