There’s a lot of comfort in condiments. Let me explain that a bit more. The likes of ketchup, mayo, and mustard feel like constants: no matter what you’re eating them with, they remain the same flavor, texture, and color, giving you a sense of familiarity and assurance that no matter what’s going on on your plate, your sauces will remain the same.

Except…when they don’t. Over the last couple of decades, we’ve seen food companies make some wild swings with condiments, turning them into lurid colors that may or may not entice you to eat them. Now, McCormick has done that again with its French’s Goomi’s Green Mustard, which it’s bringing out in a new partnership with the upcoming Minions & Monsters. Your kids might love it. You, on the other hand, may have to be convinced. Let’s discuss.

French’s Goomi’s Green Mustard

French’s Goomi’s Green Mustard, according to McCormick’s press release, is a “playful take on the classic yellow mustard fans know and love.” McCormick has taken its regular yellow mustard and infused it with spirulina, turning it a vibrant green, but with it having the same flavor you expect. McCormick is using the tagline “Enjoy The Mayhem” with this new mustard, and it’s hard to deny that kids will probably get down with the slightly anarchic nature of having a bright green sauce on their plate.

For folks who are worried that they’ll only be able to get green French’s mustard for the foreseeable, though, Goomi’s Green Mustard is just one of two products McCormick is bringing out in partnership with Minions & Monsters. French’s Minion Yellow Mustard is a combo of its classic yellow mustard with limited-edition Minions packaging, and it arrives at the same time. Or you can grab one of each, in a two-pack.

History Repeats Itself…

Now, this does sound fun and all – but it does all feel a liiiiittle familiar. Remember Heinz EZ Squirt? For a minute there, back in the 2000s, it was all the rage: A selection of ketchups available in bright blue and green, they were simultaneously fun and very weird. However, after an initial burst of popularity, they kinda faded into obscurity, banished to the graveyard of food gimmickry.

Given that McCormick is releasing its green mustard as a limited-edition product, we’d imagine that it might not stick around enough to develop the same reputation that EZ Squirt did. Maybe just don’t make it a permanent thing, guys. Regardless of its intentions, Goomi’s Green Mustard and French’s Minions Yellow Mustard will be available June 1, online and in select retailers.
