McDonald’s: We need to talk. You’ve been making changes. We’ve noticed. And to be honest, you’re doing it in the wrong place. In the last month or so, McDonald’s has made a few tweaks to how it does things that haven’t gone down well with customers, including ending its BOGOs and nerfing everyone’s points in its rewards scheme – while also holding tight on its other changes that clearly haven’t worked. One of these has now spilled over to the internet, and the online world has given its verdict.

“What’s the burger chain done now?” I hear you cry. Well, let’s see what’s riling up the good folks of Reddit this time.
Please, McDonald’s, It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way…
The change in question that McDonald’s fans are pleading for on Reddit concerns the design of its iced coffee cup lids, which the chain recently updated. This lid now seems to be standard issue in its Canadian restaurants, but in the US, it’s normally used for its new refresher drinks. The problem, though, is that this lid now seems to be increasingly ending up on cups of iced coffee.
And why is that an issue? Because the lid has a long, fairly wide hole, which is prone to spillages at the merest bump. Redditors say that it’s a particular problem when they’re driving. “Come on McDonald’s, there’s gotta be a better design for this new coffee cup lid,” said the person who posted the thread that kicked this all off. “That hole is just too big and without cover, it spills out whenever I turn or hit the brake.”
Having said all this, there are some supporters of these new lids. Some people like the fact that McDonald’s has done away with paper straws in a more environmentally friendly and waste-conscious move. In terms of practicality, though, they’re a little tough.
Reddit: The People’s Forum
Although taking to the online world to voice irritation with a massive franchise might feel futile, it’s worth remembering that these chains are definitely listening to feedback on what they do – and Reddit is one of the most valuable tools that customers have at their disposal to discuss changes. Reddit has also been the place where fast food fans have talked about what chains are doing right: Burger King’s recent changes were picked up on by Redditors, and they were fans.
So, it’s not all doom and gloom, guys – but McDonald’s, your cups definitely do have people feeling gloomy. Ball’s in your court.
