The rumors are true. McDonald’s just made a huge change to their value menu, and people are pretty up in arms about it. After some investigating, I count myself among the angry mob. Let’s discuss. (Yes, that’s a pitchfork in my closet. Ignore it. I promise to be calm.)

To understand the outrage, we can take a closer look at one flagship breakfast item: McDonald’s Hash Browns.
About a week ago, I complained about the price of McDonald’s Hash Browns and reminded everyone of something they probably already know, which is that Trader Joe’s sells a dupe for a tenth (A TENTH) of the price. I was hoping for a positive change to that with these menu changes. Sadly, when you break it down, that really isn’t the case.
As of April 21st, McDonald’s new value menu came into effect—and you can say bye-bye to BOGOs.
It’s sort of a good, bad, and ugly situation. The good: Prices of many breakfast and standard menu individual items are (theoretically) lower than before. The bad: No more BOGOs. The ugly: With no more BOGOs, depending on what you order, you’re paying more for less.
Is it all bad? No. And we talk more in-depth about the exact changes on this new menu here. The $5 and $6 meal deals might be the light at the end of this tunnel.
As someone who just checked the prices of McDonald’s Hash Browns two weeks ago, I can use them as a metric.
Here’s the deal: The BOGO hash browns deal on the old value menu was the only thing cutting the cost of those ridiculously overpriced potato pucks. (The “BOGO” is that you buy one, get one for just $1, by the way—not buy one, get one free.)
Two weeks ago, the hash browns at my local McDonald’s were $2.99. With the BOGO, that means you get two for $3.99. Egregious, but okay. Whatever.
Now, they’re priced at $2.59. With no BOGO, you have to buy two at full price, which is $5.18. I’m so sorry, but excuse me? Excuse me??
EXCUSE ME????
“So just buy one hash brown, Ariana.”
WHO EATS JUST ONE MCDONALD’S HASH BROWN??? PSYCHOPATHS??
It’s fine. I’m fine. Let’s move on.
People on Reddit are also pointing out that some prices on the value menu have barely slashed at all.
Obviously, comments from a Reddit thread don’t count as verified information. But I can personally say a coffee is still $2.99 at my local McDonald’s… only now, it’s no longer a BOGO. So that’s one price on my end that hasn’t gone down but has lost its original deal. Sigh.
Anyways… how do YOU feel about this change to the Mickey D’s menu? Lemme know in the comments.
