Do you remember your 18th birthday? What year did it take place in? I shudder to reflect on when that was for me, but it had a “1” at the start of it, and let me tell you, I can remember the turn of the millennium clear as day – so my own 18th now feels like a distant memory. Ah, to be young again. To be in the first flush of youth, my whole life ahead of me.

That might be how one Mountain Dew flavor feels – or at least it would, if it didn’t have such an illustrious history already. A fan favorite has just turned 18, and we’re here to celebrate.
Happy Birthday, Voltage!
A couple of days ago, Mountain Dew announced via its Instagram that its Voltage flavor is celebrating its 18th birthday this month, prompting some congratulatory messages – and, in typical fashion, a lot of people asking Mtn Dew to bring back other favorites. ‘Twas ever thus on social media. I’m gonna focus on the birthday wishes, though, at least for now. “Cheers to a real one,” stated one person, with another saying, “Been here since the beginning.”
That beginning was back in 2008, when Mountain Dew Voltage (which is part of its new variety pack) won the original DEWmocracy vote, beating out Revolution and Supernova to become a new permanent addition to the brand’s line-up. After dropping in the summer of that year, Voltage went on to earn the majority of the vote in August, finally being made permanent in December. Some of the comments on its birthday Insta post highlighted that while it currently has the spotlight (what with it being celebrated and all), the other two flavors in the DEWmocracy vote deserve a little bit of love – and a comeback. “Supernova 18 years old too btw,” said one person. Hey, can’t you give it a moment to shine?!
You’re Getting Old Now, Kid
Voltage may still be baby-faced, but other flavors in the Mountain Dew line-up will be celebrating significantly older birthdays in the coming years. In 2040, Mountain Dew will (MAYBE) be marking its official 100th birthday, if we’re taking the alleged invention of its original formula in 1940 as its starting point (it wasn’t actually introduced as Mountain Dew until 1948, and its formula was subsequently tweaked in 1958 — so if you wanna use those dates, that’s cool, but I wanna be historical about this). Mountain Dew Code Red, meanwhile, celebrates the big 2-5 this year. What do you buy for a drink for its birthday? A…drink?
