It seems so long ago, but there was a time―I believe it was called second grade―when life was simple, school was mostly just putting stickers on things, and somebody else made lunch every single day. I can almost remember that electric feeling of anticipation as we all reached into the bellies of our crinkly brown bags to reveal the treasures within. For some, it was crust-cut sandwiches already seeping with wounds of inky purple jelly. Others were entrusted to build something called “Lunchables” with shingles of cheese and oddly glistening coins of ham.

But like a lot of kids already way too comfortable with a life hinged on instant gratification, I was only interested in one thing: dessert. And while opinions on the best snack cakes vary, for me, that meant Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls. Seriously, every year it was socially acceptable (and definitely a few when it wasn’t), school lunch ended with Little Debbie. Of course Debbie and I both matured in the intervening years. Not in appearance―Debbie is still, totally uncreepily, Little―but the company did just release a surprisingly sophisticated new flavor: Little Debbie Mocha Swiss Rolls.
Caffeine In Kids’ Snacks?
No. According to the Little Debbie website, this new iteration of everyone’s favorite cylindrical snack cake is just like the original, only here “swirled with mocha-flavored creme.” If you want more specific details and don’t mind stumbling over a few multisyllabic words, there’s a full list of ingredients here. And since there’s no mention of coffee, we’re assuming the “Natural and Artificial Flavors” part is where the taste (but not the punch) of java jumps in.
To be honest, it almost seems like Little Debbie’s timing is geared a bit more toward…well, people in (and around) my generation—those of us sophisticated enough to know their favorite cold brew brand but not so broken by adulthood that we don’t still fantasize about school lunch.
Where To Find Them
The answers are pretty much anywhere, now, and, sure, why not? Since they’re not caffeinated, Little Debbie Mocha Swiss Rolls seem pretty family friendly. Though PSA to parents: you’ll still be terrorized by the usual sugar crash. And, given how seductively chocolate and coffee go together, you might consider this a way to introduce your kiddos’ palates to a slightly more sophisticated flavor profile. (We mean, like, 10 years and up―pretty sure most kids still prefer Elmer’s Glue to coffee until they’re at least double digits.)
Fair warning: two of the Mocha Swiss Rolls make for a serving, and they pack more than a bit of sugar, so might we suggest leaning into the adultness of it all and pairing them with an instant espresso. You could even lean into the nostalgia of it all with a completely unironic Fresh Prince of Bel-Air viewing party.
