Pub subs―the colloquial term for Publix’s sub sandwiches―are undoubtedly a Southern icon. And, as any good Southerner knows, it’s a true art form. But, hey, I’m not here to exclude anyone. I firmly believe that anyone can approach the build-your-own sub counter at Publix with expert level skills with the right tips and tricks. Then you’ll be off on the most delicious and satisfying beach day or road trip of your life.

Here’s Your How-To

If it’s your first pub sub, or you’re just looking to expand your horizons with something new, I have some good news for you: Publix’s menu of sub options are fail-safe. Especially with the Boar’s Head and fried chicken tender options, starting with a base of something from the overhead menu will set you up for success―even if it just helps you to get a better understanding of what’s available. Say, you like the meat option in one of the Boar’s head sandwiches, but would prefer to pair it with the cheese from another. Well, the world is your oyster. Or you might be instantly sold on one of the flavored subs already on offer.

No matter what, though, your journey towards customization paradise is far from over. Start with your choice of bread, to which I’d generally suggest the Five-Grain Italian Bread. But go with your heart―even if it leads you to a wrap as opposed to the traditional sub. It’s good to have a sauce under all the layers of stuffing, too. But your options do stall out after mustard and mayo. Between spicy and regular mustards, chipotle mayo, and ranch, you have sauce options abound. Your ideal meat and cheese selection that follows is really only half the fun to be had.

Customization Is Your Friend

Pub subs are always satisfying because they can really accommodate everyone. From the pickiest eaters to those who’ve never said no to trying new things, pub subs are easy to manipulate into your perfect bite. I, myself, love pickles. But on my pub sub, I prefer the taste of banana peppers to pickles. There’s no shame in going bare bones either. Say you went down the toasted fried chicken tender sub route, it makes sense if you’d want to steer away from a bunch of cold and wet vegetables to top it off.

Regardless, I’d suggest adding salt (and pepper, if that’s your thing) to your layer of vegetables before picking one extra sauce that you’re excited about―this way no bite is dry. Stick to your favorite flavors and you can’t make any mistakes. The best pub sub has been and always will be made with all of the bold desire of its designer.
