I need to start things off by setting the record straight. When sharing the news of Unreal’s latest drop, I originally compared them to peanut butter M&M’s. That’s because Unreal calls them a comparison to “the nostalgic peanut butter candy you grew up loving.” Now in my mind that was M&M’s version of the poppable peanut butter candy because they’ve always been around since I was a kid.

Well, it turns out that Reese’s Pieces have also been around my entire life. While both candies came out before I was born (*cough* 1994 *cough*), Reese’s actually predates M&M’s by a dozen years. Whoopsie! I’ll have to talk to my mother about why it took her so long to introduce me to Reese’s Pieces. Now that we got that sorted, we can get to the main event. We shared the news about Unreal’s new Peanut Butter Drops but now comes time for us to see how they really taste.
Our Verdict
Pros: These things are damn good! They taste very similar to Reese’s Pieces so Unreal nailed that front. They do something that Reese’s peanut butter can’t do though―they come in with a punch of power. I love Reese’s peanut butter, but it coyly comes to play in a candy because it has to match the accompanying chocolate. This peanut butter does it better by coming in loud, proud, and sticks around.
The peanut butter is unfathomably smooth. Unreal’s then matched that smoothness in the candy shell. It’s softer than you’d find in M&M’s or Reese’s Pieces, so it just helps create a fully effortless eating experience. These would make for the ideal movie theater candy in even the quietest of movies because your bites won’t even make a sound.
Cons: I took a food science class in college that taught us about the “melt in your mouth” experience. Foods are created to be so soft and satisfyingly soluble so you eat more. Your brain and stomach feel fuller when you’re eating denser foods. This is all certainly more scientific than we need to be here on Sporked but really, that’s what’s happening here.
Unreal’s built their Peanut Butter Drops to be creamy throughout the entire process. This results in a truly satisfying experience that leads to overconsumption. I had to actually put the entire bag away so I could finish writing this. Admittedly, it’s a nitpicky thing to pick out for this review but hey, when the food’s otherwise perfect we have to find something to talk about here.
