McDonald’s doesn’t update their breakfast menu every day, so it’s worth paying attention when they do turn the innovation gaze away from lunch and dinner for once (even if we are excited about that new Caesar sauce). Much like the last McDonald’s breakfast innovation I covered here on Sporked, we’re here to talk about a new sauce on a classic sandwich. Let’s find out whether this new Honey Brown Butter sauce can elevate the classic Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit sandwich (plus what might be the world’s first review of a custom vegetarian variant).

New McDonald’s Breakfast!

Pros: The “new” here is the honey brown butter sauce, so let’s cover how that affects the flavor combo we’re all familiar with. The sweetness is a great addition to a largely savory sandwich, but the real value is the moisture. Compared to the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McGriddle (my lifetime go-to during McBreakfast hours), the classic version of this biscuit sandwich comes off super dry. The honey brown butter sauce helps mitigate that dryness so you’re not choking on biscuit dust.

Cons: I’m not sure this sandwich needs the bacon! This is coming from the broadly bacon-neutral position I’ve held my whole life, but I think the sweetness of this honey brown butter sauce gets brought down to earth by the.

New McDonald’s Breakfast!

Speaking of being bacon-neutral, I asked McDonald’s to send over a vegetarian version of this new sandwich as well. I don’t follow the vegetarian diet, but I’m also not dumb enough to get McDonald’s breakfast delivered without having something for my vegetarian girlfriend. I think this is what they call “work-life balance”.

Pros: Everything I had to say about the bacon version still applies here, and more. Without the most savory aspect of the sandwich in play, this ends up much sweeter overall. As a fan of McDonald’s sweeter breakfast options (McGriddles and flapjacks both), this is even closer to my ideal morning flavor combo. This custom order is so good, it should be on the menu…

Cons: …which means if you want this, you’re ordering the standard version and removing bacon without lowering the price. This is a biased, broader complaint against fast food ordering on behalf of the vegetarians in my life: Why aren’t there more meat-free variants available for innovations like this? Maybe they’re worried it’ll eat into their robust hash brown margins.
