Remember when Burger King released the chocolate burger? Remember how weird that was? You might not, considering that it came out in Thailand and never made it to other parts of the world. But we remember. Oh, boy, how we remember. And it seems that McDonald’s had one eye on its competitor there, too.

Why do we say that, you ask? Because it’s just brought out a McGriddle with a very similar vibe – and yet again, this one’s not available in the US. Other countries get to have all the fun, huh. Let’s discuss.
Chocolate McGriddles
Instagram snack account @snackolator dropped the news yesterday that McDonald’s Hong Kong has just released Chocolate McGriddles (or Choco McGriddles, to give them their official name). The vibe here is, if we do say so ourselves, simultaneously weird and strangely appealing. The chocolate of it all is in the McGriddle patties themselves, as opposed to some type of sauce or a chocolate-flavored filling. The standard additional ingredients, like your sausage, egg, hash browns, and cheese, remain the same.
You can get the Choco McGriddles in a breakfast sandwich or as part of a Deluxe Breakfast, which comes with a sausage patty, a hash brown, and scrambled eggs. In case there’s a shadow of a doubt about it all, these are limited-time items and won’t be part of the permanent menu (well, unless McDonald’s HK surprises us here) – so if you happen to be reading this from Hong Kong, now’s your time to act.
And How Do The People Feel?
Well, we haven’t been able to find any proper reviews of the Choco McGriddle just yet – but responses in @snackolator’s comment section have been mixed, and vaguely reflect how we feel about them. On one hand, there’s a cautious excitement about them: A sweet-salty combination always hits, and provided that the McGriddles don’t overpower everything, they could work surprisingly well with umami-rich breakfast foods.
On the other hand, some people have rightly pointed out that these might be slightly…lacking in flavor. Chocolate cakes, pancakes, and pastries can often look good, but have barely any actual chocolate taste – and people feel that putting chocolate chips in McGriddles might have been a better move, so you get a bit more intensity. I sort of agree with that assessment, although again, we don’t actually know what these taste like yet. We just have to observe from afar for now.
