Aldi, please. Please! Stop! Stop changing stuff! Over the last few months, the grocery store has been on a recipe-changing spree. And. We’re. Not. Exaggerating. Customers have been noticing that the ingredients lists for their favorite items are looking different pretty much every week at the moment, and there’s a general sense of disquiet brewing in its community about the frequency with which Aldi’s deciding to do this. Yes, supermarkets changing stuff isn’t new. But it feels like EVERYTHING’s different.

So, it’s with a heavy heart that we tell you that…there’s been another example of this. So long, old Fruit Strips, we barely knew ye.
Aldi Fruit Strips: There She Goes Again
In the last few weeks, customers have noticed that Aldi’s Strawberry Fruit Strips, which have long been a snacking staple for a lot of people (and their kids), have been a little different – and that it’s down to a recipe change. In one Reddit thread, a customer stated that Aldi’s “completely changed the flavor and texture, saying that the product now “tastes much more artificial but somehow less like strawberry at the same time. The texture used to be more like traditional fruit leathers (think the Trader Joe’s ones if you’ve ever tried them) but now they’re more gummy.” They then concluded by saying, “Imagine if a fruit roll up was shorter, thicker, and worse.” Yikes.
In the same thread, another customer posted a picture of the old ingredients list for Aldi’s Strawberry Fruit Strips, and people got to work analyzing the differences. The new strips now list table sugar as an ingredient, which the old ones didn’t have (although the sugar content has remained the same, somewhat curiously), and the potassium content is now slightly different. There don’t seem to be any drastic swaps here, though, which makes the taste and texture differences a little odd.
So, Why Have They Changed?
It’s reasonable to assume that Aldi’s swapped its suppliers here — it does this a lot, so it seems — and that swap has brought with it different types or qualities of the same ingredients, as well as perhaps different quantities. The way they’re being made may also now be different, hence the texture change.
Whatever it’s done, though, people really aren’t happy – and some are saying it’s a product they’ll no longer buy. “’m noticing more and more things are changing like this at Aldi,” said one disappointed shopper. We are too, folks. We are too.
