Aldi’s Krispy Kreme Dupe Is Surprisingly Decent

In a world of dupes, be an Aldi dupe. The way that the store can seem like it’s playing seriously fast and loose with how close it gets to other brand names and products can be a source of constant enjoyment. However, behind all that “almost, but not quite” to-ing and fro-ing, Aldi’s making sure that the product’s its duping are…pretty good. Its Red Bull dupe, its Häagen-Dazs dupe, and plenty of its other ones are fan favorites, and taste almost as good as the real thing, without the hefty price tag.

And the retailer’s done it once again, this time in the doughnut aisle. Krispy Kreme? Never heard of it. 

Bake Shop Glazed Donuts

Aldi’s version of Krispy Kreme’s classic glazed donuts are called, appropriately, Bake Shop Glazed Donuts. No precariously close brand name here! Cue trademark lawyers everywhere breathing a sigh of relief. If you squint, these look pretty much exactly like Krispy Kreme’s offering: Ring donuts covered in a sugary, milky coating, tucked together in a box. If you order them online, they run for around $5 for six, coming in cheaper doughnut-by-doughnut than the chain’s option. 

Now, let’s be real: A grocery store doughnut is never really going to compare to one made in front of you at Krispy Kreme (or in the back kitchen, but you know what I mean – one that’s made fresh). That said, customers have said that Aldi’s version is pretty solid! “I bought these after reading a few reviews earlier this month. I was impressed,” said a happy shopper on Reddit. “For store bought donuts these are really good.” Another person said they were “RIDICULOUSLY good,” capitals and all. 

It’s Not All Glazing

It’s worth pointing out that Aldi’s Bake Shop Glazed Donuts don’t get universally positive reviews across the board. Some people say they’re a little too dense; others say they just don’t stand up to scrutiny in a side-by-side comparison to the kind you’d get in a specialist doughnut store. Well, sure, but that’s kind of to be expected. As they go, though, you can do a lot worse.

Aldi also does a chocolate version of the same donut, if you’re so inclined, which is just as good (if customer opinion is anything to go by, anyway). Oh, and if you’re near a Wegmans, it also does a glazed doughnut that’s worth your time and money. We also, incidentally, ranked Entenmann’s doughnuts as the best around back in the day. God, I love options.
