McDonald’s Is Bringing Back This Sauce After 5 Long Years

Every fast food spot needs a little spice on the menu. Chick-fil-A’s got their spicy additions and Burger King’s fiery chicken sandwich has been going strong for decades. But honestly, the fast food spicy chicken sandwich is getting a little played out. Sure, it’s a classic for a reason, but what if I want to be the master of my own spicy destiny? I.e., what if I want to drown my burger, fries, and—heck—maybe even my vanilla milkshake in some liquid inferno?

Rumor has it that McDonald’s aims to quell the severe lack of hot sauce options on its menu. According to an insider scoop in an Instagram post, the chain is bringing back its Mighty Hot sauce, which first launched in 2020 to plenty of fanfare. This comes on the heels of the chain’s brand-new Caesar sauce, too—We didn’t expect 2026 to be the year McDonald’s finally gets saucy, but we’re not complaining.

When can we expect the sauce to return?

Since we’re still waiting on confirmation from ol’ Micky D’s itself, we can only speculate when we’ll be blessed with the return of Mighty Hot Sauce. According to the internet’s fast-food rumor mill, we can expect the sauce sometime in September. Hopefully that means the sauce will stick around through the winter; warming hot sauce makes a hot meal on a cold day all the more cozy.

It isn’t just the returning sauce that’s spicing things up at McDonald’s, either. Ronald is also bestowing some spicy nuggets upon us. These are the same classic nuggets the chain is famous for, but with a seasoned, spice-forward coating. You better believe the brave among us will be dunking those chili-dusted nuggies into our Mighty Sauce.

What does Mighty Hot Sauce taste like? 

You know how most fast food hot sauces are basically just a vinegary, low-quality version of buffalo sauce? And they’re rarely actually spicy? Micky D’s won the hearts of spice fans by making a sauce that stands out alongside its vinegary, watery counterparts—and it actually has some kick. 

Mighty Sauce is kind of like a blend of Sririacha, sweet chili sauce, and buffalo all rolled into one fiery, all-purpose condiment. It includes apricot, different types of chili peppers, garlic, and vinegar, so it checks off the umami box while also delivering a nice tangy vinegar kick, lots of sweetness, and plenty of (but not too much) heat. It’s ready to dunk some nuggets into, but it’s also perfectly acceptable as a light drizzle on a burger just to add a little flavor backbone. We hope Mighty Hot Sauce sticks around this time, and hopefully it triggers a domino effect among fast food chains and we finally start getting the actually-spicy hot sauce that we desire and so rightfully deserve.
