The Kirkland Chocolate Chips Are Back

The latest sightings have Costco shoppers talking on social media. A Reddit user recently shared a photo of the Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and revealed that the product had started showing up again at Costco warehouses. The item number is 1331846 and shoppers have reported finding it at locations in different parts of the country, including Oregon and Connecticut.

And judging by the social media reaction, plenty of Costco members have been waiting for this moment.

Why Did Costco Discontinue The Chocolate Chips?

The original disappearance of the Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips had nothing to do with Costco shoppers suddenly deciding they hated chocolate chips. Quite the opposite. The problem was cocoa.

Back in 2024, the price of cocoa went through the roof, with reports saying cocoa costs had increased by nearly 200% compared with the previous year. That made it much more expensive to produce the Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips. And that created a tough situation for Costco.

Kirkland Signature products are supposed to give members plenty of bang for their buck. But with cocoa prices climbing so quickly, Costco estimated that its chocolate chips would need to sell at a higher price than competitors like the Nestlé Toll House Semi-Sweet Morsels to make the numbers work.

Paying more for the Kirkland version would have made the Costco deal look a lot less appealing. So Costco pulled the Kirkland chocolate chips. 

Bakers Were Not Ready To Say Goodbye

The disappearance of the Kirkland chocolate chips caused plenty of frustration among Costco shoppers.

That might sound dramatic for a bag of chocolate chips, but anyone who has ever made a Costco-sized batch of cookies knows the struggle.

The Kirkland bag was big, convenient and popular with home bakers. When it disappeared, shoppers took to Reddit to organize a protest, compare alternatives, and complain about having to find a replacement.

There is no guarantee that the chocolate chips have reached every Costco yet.

Recent Reddit posts show that availability varies by warehouse. Some shoppers are already grabbing bags, while others are still waiting for their local stores to get them. The easiest way to check may be the Costco app. Searching for item No. 1331846 can help shoppers see if the product is showing up at nearby warehouses.

And if the chips suddenly appear in stock, there is probably no need to overthink it. After all, Costco already made shoppers wait two years.
