As Sporked’s self-appointed chief chip correspondent, I have tasted a lot of crunchy snacks this year. From Pringles and plain potato chips to salt and vinegar chips and ketchup chips, 2022 has been a huge learning experience for me and chips. Some of these snacks I was readily familiar with, and eating them felt like hugging an old friend. Other snacks were brand-spanking new, exciting and completely threw me for a loop. Regardless, when it comes to crunchy snacks, we always wanted a delightfully crispy, crunchy texture and a bold, memorable flavor. I’ve done a few hundred taste tests this year, so I’m a tough critic. That said, I just couldn’t stop munching on these two crunchy snacks.

Cheddar Jalapeño Cheetos, my favorite snack of the damn year, have everything I want in my junk food—they’re fatty, crunchy, cheesy, salty, and peppery. These are probably hard on your teeth and your body, too, but I just can’t put them down. The flavor of these is unstoppable, and they were our unanimous pick for the best Cheetos snack. For our money, they’re way better than anything Flamin’ Hot.
My favorite Dorito flavor by far, Tapatío Doritos are delightfully spicy and tangy, just like the hot sauce they’re inspired by. Don’t sleep on the direct heat that these crunchy cheese chips provide; the flavor will knock you back if you aren’t ready. In my opinion, these are the best Tapatío collab of all, and they pair perfectly with some tacos and a Mexican Coke. Spicy tang perfectly complements corn chips, which is why Tapatío Doritos are my number one Dorito and my number two crunchy snack of the year.
