There’s a seemingly infinite world of possibility when it comes to what you can leave Trader Joe’s with. Sure, you can go in and do your average, boring food shop. But more than likely you’re leaving with at least a few randoms thrown in. Well I often think about how those randoms become the highlight of my trip. Naturally, that means I have to share them with you folk! It’s the best day of my week, in fact, so let’s get into the five most interesting things I bought and if they were worth it.

Organic Peanut Butter & Cocoa Crunch Cereal

This cereal was included in the August edition of the Trader Joe’s seasonal pamphlet, the Fearless Flyer, so I decided to give it a shot. Basically it’s the Trader Joe’s version of Reese’s Puffs. Except, this box has a much more mild favor. I expected to be able to taste the chocolate and peanut butter distinctly in each bite, but that wasn’t necessarily the case. It still tasted great, but one of my favorite qualities of Reese’s Puffs is the way it infuses into the milk. I knew I’d need to put it to that test as well and it wasn’t really an impressive display. It just made everything have less peanut butter and cocoa flavor. It tasted less like a Cocoa Puffs or Reese’s Puffs milk and more like an average lightly peanut butter-y cereal.

Aqua de Kefir Guava Paloma

This is probably my new favorite drink that you can get from Trader Joe’s. If you always have liked the idea of kombucha, yet can’t get behind the taste, this is probably the drink for you, too. It has a light fermented flavor, but none of the aggressive funkiness that is inescapable in kombucha. It’s no stronger than a typical Greek yogurt or kefir level of fermentation. The Guava Paloma flavor is delightfully refreshing and has an extremely natural tropical guava flavor that makes it perfect for beating the heat through the remainder of summer.

Plumcots

Plumcots, for anyone who doesn’t know, are what you get when you cross apricots and plums. And right now they’re perfectly in season. You get all of the juicy sweetness of plums and the gentle tartness of an apricot. If stone fruit is your thing, it’s the perfect time to try these out. They’re very briefly on shelves and every variety that Trader Joe’s sells are oh-so satisfying.

Organic Iced Oatmeal Baked Whole Grain Bar

I bought these thinking that they could be a possible dupe for the Clif Bar kids’ bar I love so much. These don’t have “KIDZ” written across the box and are at a lower price point, so they were very attractive to me. Unfortunately they’re not an exact dupe, mainly because of the texture. They’re much less tender and are much chewier. The density isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just not the dupe I was hoping for. The flavor was great though. They’re oat-y and full of cinnamon flavor. You can’t really taste the icing on top, but I didn’t really expect to either.

Joe’s Dark Coffee

As far as a grocery store coffee goes, this is one of the best I’ve ever tried. It’s quite a dark blend and it’s very strong. So if that’s not your kind of coffee, then you probably won’t love this. But it’s not at all sour and smooth going down. It doesn’t even need cream or sugar to be pleasant on the palate. Is it the best coffee I’ve ever had? Probably not. But for under $10 a bag, this is a brew I can get behind.
