Anyone who frequents McDonald’s has their favorite go-to order. There are so many iconic items on the menu, but there’s always that one item that gets our taste buds stoked as we pull into the parking lot beneath those looming golden arches. Whether it’s the almighty Big Mac, a breakfast Egg McMuffin, a batch of chicken nuggets, the classic Quarter Pounder with cheese, or one of the many other items available, most of us usually tend not to stray too far from our tried-and-true favorite flavors.

But what some people don’t realize is that the menu they see every time they stand in line can have some creativity worked into it. McDonald’s, like many other fast food chains, allows customers to make some clever alterations to their meals, crafting something new and exciting. If you don’t know about any of these ordering hacks, take notes. The next time you head to your local Mickey D’s, just know there’s a whole new world of flavors waiting to be discovered. Now you can feel like a true McProfessional when you stroll through those front doors.

Steamed Bun Swap

Have you ever ordered the Filet-O-Fish and thought, “This bun is so much better than the buns I get when I order every other burger”? Well, there’s a good reason why taking a bite into McDonald’s fish sandwich feels different. The bun used in this particular item is steamed, whereas the sesame seed buns used for everything else aren’t. But all you have to do is ask kindly for a steamed bun on your next Big Mac (or whatever other burger you order), and you can get that same pillowy, steamed bite the Filet-O-Fish delivers.

Surf n’ Turf

Here’s a great way to combine two classic sandwich flavors into one epic bite. If you’re not hungry enough to eat both a Filet-O-Fish and Big Mac (or whichever burger you order), you can simply remove the crispy fish patty from the Filet-O-Fish and plop it right in between the buns of your burger for one sandwich with surf and turf flavors. You do still need to order up both sandwiches, so this hack won’t save you money, but it does deliver big on dual flavor.

Crisp Up Your Burgers

If we’re being completely honest, sometimes the burgers at Mickey D’s can feel a bit floppy. Although they deliver on taste, sometimes the texture can feel totally underwhelming. But, there’s an easy fix, and it comes in the form of chicken nuggets. Adding chicken nuggets to your burgers gives every bite a crunchy texture so you can forget about the flop.

McAffogato

An affogato is a classic Italian dessert consisting of two simple ingredients: espresso and gelato. You won’t find them on a McDonald’s menu, but lucky for you, they’re so easy to make yourself. Now, you won’t find gelato on the menu, but you can get vanilla ice cream (if that darn machine is working properly) instead. Just ask for a cup of the ice cream, a shot of espresso, and combine for a quick DIY Italian treat.

Get A Fresh Egg For Breakfast

If you head to McDonald’s for breakfast and order a McGriddle or a biscuit sandwich, the egg on it is a folded, pre-frozen square that just doesn’t taste like the real thing. But, you can ask for a “round egg” swap, and instead of the folded yellow square, you get the same freshly cracked egg that the Egg McMuffin has.
