The modern food world can be exhausting. Fun, yes, but tiring at the same time. Where that sense of fatigue hits me most is when I see a food company performing yet another experiment with their products that feel purely designed to gain traction, usually at the expense of any real enjoyment of the product in question. And for some reason, that happens a lot when it comes to sandwiches. I’m talking green burger buns, chocolate burgers, sandwiches that use fried Uncrustables as the vessel (yes, really). It’s a lot.

Well, it works. I’m sitting here writing about it all, aren’t I? And now, KFC’s the latest brand to pull this move, by combining OREOs and chicken. Let’s break it down.
KFC OREO Chicken Burger
Yesterday, we discovered that KFC was releasing a new chicken sandwich with…yes…an OREO bun. According to Dexerto, this new menu item will be made from a fried chicken thigh filet, which is covered in a combination of mashed potatoes and crushed OREO pieces. The whole thing will then be sandwiched in two pieces of OREO-flavored bread, bearing the dark brown shade of the cookie, too.
We guess it’s a good thing that KFC (and/or Mondelēz International) hasn’t tried to literally make massive OREOs to house this chicken and mashed potato combination in. Messy, right? To be honest, though, the bun really isn’t the strangest thing about this thing. Mashed potatoes and OREO PIECES??? It’s making me feel vaguely queasy, I have to be honest. I’m all for sweet-savory combos, but this one, if you’ll excuse the vague pun I’m about to make, takes the biscuit.
And Where Can I Try This Burger, Should I Want To?
Unless you’re in China, you can’t. It’s dropping in the country on August 28, where we would imagine it’ll only be available for a limited time. Will it make it elsewhere? Who knows. I wouldn’t put it past the two brands to try and make it happen.
The news of this OREO Chicken Burger also sent me down a delightful rabbit hole on what KFC China has been up to recently, which has been, if I do say so myself, bizarre. Preceding this burger was a KFC-flavored OREO – quite literally, an OREO cookie which had an Original Recipe-flavored créme inside. Last month, KFC China also started selling whole mini watermelons alongside its paper-wrapped roasted chicken. A strange, strange turn of events.
