Hot honey has had a pretty impressive run. It’s been drizzled over pizza, fried chicken, ice cream, and anything else that didn’t put up a fight. But Sara Lee has decided to skip the drizzling altogether and bring Mike’s Hot Honey’s signature sweet heat straight to sandwich bread. Because why should the filling get all the attention?

The new limited-edition Sara Lee Mike’s Hot Honey Half Loaf combines sweet honey flavor with a little chili pepper heat in every slice. It’s the same sweet-and-spicy combination that’s made Mike’s Hot Honey such a hit, only now it’s doing double duty as the thing holding your sandwich together. Regular white bread must be feeling a little underdressed.

Spicy bread sounds like something I’d dream up after staring into the fridge for too long, but I’m not complaining. There are plenty of sandwiches that could benefit from a little heat and this saves you the trouble of adding it yourself.

What Do You Do With Hot Honey Bread?

My mind immediately goes to grilled cheese. Hot honey and melted cheese are already a winning combination, so putting the flavor directly into the bread feels like a no-brainer. Add some sharp cheddar, get the outside nice and crispy, and I’d say you’ve got a pretty solid lunch on your hands.

A turkey and cheese sandwich could work, too, especially with something salty like bacon thrown in. Or you could go all out with fried chicken, pickles, and a little mayo. At that point, you’re basically building a restaurant sandwich in your own kitchen, minus the $18 price tag.

I’m also curious about French toast. Honey, chili, cinnamon, and maple syrup could either be brilliant or a breakfast experiment that is never spoken of again. Either way, I’d give it a shot.

And before you start worrying about setting your mouth on fire at lunchtime, Sara Lee describes the chili pepper kick as subtle. This isn’t supposed to be a hot sauce challenge disguised as a loaf of bread.

Where Can You Buy Sara Lee Mike’s Hot Honey Bread?

The limited-edition Sara Lee Mike’s Hot Honey Half Loaf is available now at grocery stores nationwide. Each half loaf contains 12 slices and has a suggested retail price of $2.69, though prices and availability may vary by store.

California shoppers also have another option: a Nature’s Harvest Mike’s Hot Honey Half Loaf that’s exclusive to the state. It also contains 12 slices and has the same suggested retail price of $2.69.

I have to give Sara Lee credit for this one. Hot honey has spent years being the thing you put on food, and now it’s become the food itself. Next time you make a sandwich, you might not even need to open the condiment cupboard. Although knowing me, I’d probably add more hot honey anyway.
