Remember when hot honey felt like a novelty?

Videos by Sporked

It wasn’t that long ago that spotting it on a menu meant a restaurant was trying something a little different. Sweet. Spicy. A little smoky. Fancy enough to justify the extra couple of dollars on your fried chicken sandwich. It had real flavor logic behind it―the kind that made you feel like you’d discovered something.

And then every fast food chain in America discovered it, too.

How We Got Here

Hot honey’s fast food origin story is pretty straightforward. Mike’s Hot Honey―the brand most responsible for bringing the condiment into the mainstream―spent years building partnerships with restaurant chains including KFC, Red Robin, Dunkin’, California Pizza Kitchen, and even Cinemark. The flavor had cultural momentum, broad appeal, and the rare ability to feel trendy without being too intimidating.

That’s pretty much everything a fast-food chain wants. So the menus followed.

McDonald’s kicked off the year with a Hot Honey McCrispy and other limited-time menu extensions. Freddy’s partnered directly with Mike’s Hot Honey for a chicken sandwich and tenders. Hardee’s rolled out an entire Hot Honey Chicken lineup for summer―a biscuit, a sandwich, and tenders. Firehouse Subs introduced Smokin’ Honey Melts. Whataburger joined with its Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n.

Five major chains, one flavor, all within a year.

The formula is almost always the same: Take something crispy. Add hot honey. Call it limited time. Repeat.

The New Sriracha Problem

Here’s the thing about a trend going mainstream: it stops being a trend. It becomes the default. Just like salted caramel. Like pumpkin spice. Like sriracha, which went from cult condiment to grocery-store staple and something you could find on just about everything. Hot honey is entering that same phase.

When it shows up on biscuits, chicken sandwiches, snack wraps, tenders, melts, and limited-time menus all in the same year, it’s no longer an experiment. It’s a safe bet. And fast food chains love a safe bet.

Hot honey hits a very specific sweet spot: it sounds bold enough to catch your attention, but it’s sweet enough not to alienate people who think black pepper is spicy. That’s not a criticism—it’s smart business. But it also means hot honey has quietly taken over the “safe spicy” slot that sriracha once occupied.

So… Is Hot Honey Actually Over?

Not exactly.

If anything, it’s doing what every successful food trend eventually does: becoming permanent. The biggest sign a food trend has made it isn’t that everyone is still talking about it. It’s that nobody questions seeing it on the menu. Hot honey may have started as fast food’s newest obsession.

Now it’s just another sauce.
