Don’t Skip the New Kettle Brand Gochujang Chips

Meet the newest addition to the lineup of Kettle Brand chips: Sweet & Spicy Gochujang chips. If you’re not sure what to expect when you think of gochujang-flavored potato chips, you’re in good company. For the uninitiated, gochujang is a savory, sweet, and spicy paste made from chili pepper powder, glutinous rice, and fermented soybeans. So will these taste like spicy ketchup? Will eating them be like munching on bibimbap? Kettle Brand chip flavors are known for their intensity, and gochujang isn’t exactly a mild flavor. We were excited to see how Kettle planned to make this beloved Korean condiment work as a snack food—something we haven’t really seen outside of an H Mart and, after this taste test, would love to see again.

Kettle Brand Sweet & Spicy Gochujang Potato Chips

When you pop open the bag of these limited edition Kettle Brand potato chips, you’ll get a strong whiff of something like gochujang sauce crossed with maple syrup. It has a bold, alluring tang that totally invades your nostrils, promising flavors like brown sugar, salt, smoke, and a touch of heat. And the taste absolutely delivers on those promises.

Pros: These are basically BBQ chips but so much better. The touch of gojuchang adds a rich umami saltiness that deepens every other flavor of the chip. I’m not sure how they did it, but here’s the deal: It’s a little smoky. It’s a little sweet. It’s a little spicy and tangy. It tastes a little bit like gojuchang mixed with BBQ sauce. And the crunch on that kettle chip? Obscenely delicious. Kettle Brand really understands…well, how to make the perfect kettle chip.

Cons: Okay, here’s my nitpick: For gojuchang chips, the gochujang flavor isn’t super strong. Do I care? Not really. These chips are really addictive, and gochujang is not exactly a sauce you want to pour into your mouth. If they went too bold with that flavor, these would be more of a novelty than a chip you actually want to eat by the handful.
