Trader Joe’s Newest Cookie Is Causing Quite A Stir

Sometimes, one is enough. While I’m as prone to the next person is to slowly making my way through an entire pack of cookies as they lie next to me, ever-diminishing, as I watch TV, every now and again, I practice the art of saintly restraint. I limit myself to one, safe in the knowledge that more cookies are out there, should I want them. Then, my halo appears, I sprout my wings, and I gaze upon everyone around me, in a very smug fashion, as I ascend to the clouds.

So, it’s a thrill to see Trader Joe’s drop a new cookie that serves that self-indulgent narrative, even though, because I’m located in the UK, I’ll probably not get my hands on it any time soon. Trader Joe’s customers have a lot of opinions about it, though – and not all of them are good.

A Singular Chocolate Chip Cookie

Trader Joe’s has just dropped its new solo chocolate chip cookie, which is very appropriately called A Singular Chocolate Chip Cookie. Honestly, the product description sort of writes itself here, but I’ll do it anyway: This is one chocolate chip cookie – a thick, chunky one, at that – made with two different varieties of chips (milk chocolate and semisweet), weighing in at 100 grams, individually wrapped and available in its bakery section. Trader Joe’s says that its release stems from its desire to “offer more individual treats in our bakery section.” Hence, one singular cookie.

Given its simplicity, you’d probably not expect it to cause such a stir. And yet! When news of this new cookie dropped, and a Reddit thread was posted about it, it received 125 comments in 48 hours or so, with people rushing to give their two cents.

And What Were These Two Cents?

Well, there’s one big quibble about it: Its price. The Singular Chocolate Chip Cookie costs $1.99, which some people say is just that bit too expensive for an individual treat (particularly as it’s prepackaged and not baked then and there). A couple of people pointed to other retailers who offer basically the same thing for less, and questioned whether Trader Joe’s own version is that good of a deal.

The people who have tried it, though, have said that this cookie rocks. “I just had one today it was SOOOO GOOD. It’s like a super thick cookie that’s so soft on the inside,” said one positive review. I don’t doubt it, and I’m glad to see that it feels as though it’s worth the cost. But I get the cost-to-prepackaged-nature concern — and could this not have come in a paper sleeve, maybe?
