The Best Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream We Taste Tested

The best mint chocolate chip ice cream should have the perfect balance of mint and chocolate. The base should be creamy and the mix-ins should be plentiful. In theory, mint chip ice cream should not work. Mint and vanilla and chocolate mixed together should taste overwhelming and strange. But when done well, mint chip ice cream is creamy, decadent, and oddly refreshing. It’s certainly not for everyone, but people who are into it tend to be really into it. And after this taste test, I understand why.

I didn’t know much about mint chocolate chip ice cream before going into the first taste test for this ranking, so I ordered all the pints I could get my hands on to find the mintiest, most luscious and delicious mint chip ice creams on the market. And for the second taste test, I filled in the gaps. These are the best mint chocolate chip ice cream brands you can buy at the grocery store.

Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie Ice Cream tastes like Mint Oreos (the second best Oreo flavor) meets a big glass of ice cold milk meets cookies and cream ice cream. The texture of the cookies is perfect. It’s like when you let an Oreo sit in milk for just the right amount of time. The base is minty and creamy and almost a little salty. It’s the best mint chip ice cream if you’re looking to enjoy the whole pint by yourself. The pieces of cookies break up the monotony of the ice cream and will keep your mouth entertained while you watch the new season of And Just Like That… cuddled up on your couch.

Best Classic

Dreyer’s Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream is what I think of when I think of classic mint chip ice cream. It’s pleasantly minty and has tons of chocolate chips. Plus, it’s green mint chocolate chip ice cream!!! I was disappointed that more of these ice creams weren’t bright green. It’s such a fun and nostalgic ice cream color and I’m glad Dreyer’s is sticking with it. I also love that this ice cream packs all the taste of the fancier ice creams at a lower price point. No need to break the bag for big mint chip flavor.

Best Splurge

Häagen-Dazs Mint Chip Ice Cream

Haagen-Dazs makes one classy pint of ice cream (it’s one of the best vanilla ice cream brands as well as one of the best strawberry ice cream brands). Their mint chip ice cream is so sophisticated. The flavor is light. The chocolate chips are high quality and evenly distributed. It’s not too minty or too chocolatey. It’s tasty, but it’s also tasteful. The short ingredient list feels refined. Anyone could enjoy this ice cream, but it is definitely more for someone with luxurious tastes.

Signature Selects Mint Moose Tracks Ice Cream

Mint Moose Tracks is a mint ice cream with creme de mint cups and a thick fudge swirl. What else do I need to say? If you’re not sold by that description, you’re out of your mind! This mint chip ice cream tastes just as good as it sounds. It’s rich and there are tons of mix-ins. This is the best mint chocolate chip ice cream for anyone with a major sweet tooth (aka me). I love Mint Moose Tracks.

Best for Chocolate Lovers

The chocolate chunks in Tillamook’s Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream are so phenomenal you could scoop them out and sell them on their own, making this my personal vote for the best mint chocolate chip ice cream we tried. These chocolate chunks are big and fudgy and sweet. The mint flavor is mild and, like all Tillamook ice cream, the dairy base is phenomenal. I would categorize this as chocolate chip mint ice cream rather than mint chocolate chip ice cream, but I am certainly not mad about that.

Best Budget

Trader Joe’s Mint Chip Ice Cream

Trader Joe’s Mint Chip Ice Cream might be one of best Trader Joe’s products of all time. Can you believe it?! You’re probably skeptical because you’re like, “What about the butternut squash mac and cheese? Or the hashbrowns?” But listen: This ice cream is so freaking good that the Sporked team was fighting over who would take the pint home. There are tons of chocolate chips and it’s minty without being toothpaste-y. The container is big. The price is low. Truly a perfect 10/10 and one of the best mint chocolate chip ice cream brands.

Best Ben & Jerry’s

Ben & Jerry’s Topped Thick Mint

This is the thickest of mints. This is what a topping lover’s dreams are made of. I know Ben & Jerry’s topped ice creams aren’t the easiest to eat and could definitely use a little tweaking in terms of composition, but the taste is there. This mint chip ice cream is so decadent. First of all, it’s topped with a thick layer of chocolate fudge. Underneath that is a creamy mint base peppered with pieces of crisp, chocolate mint cookies. I wish I was eating a pint of this right now.

Best of the Best

Straus Organic Milk Chocolate Chip

If you’re looking for a high quality, well-made, impressive mint chip ice cream, look no further than Straus Organic Mint Chip. It is so nice that I firmly believe you could serve it at a dinner party. It just feels fancy. It has a great distribution of chocolate chips and a wonderful mint flavor. The real star of the show is obviously the dairy. Straus does dairy well (they make some of the best chocolate milk and the best yogurt). The ice cream base in this is so creamy and luscious. If you’re looking for the best mint chocolate chip ice cream, Straus is it.

  • My question is this :
What form of “mint” are we talking about here ?
You do realize, the Mint Ice Cream, (and, the Mint Chocolate Chip), we have ‘now-a-days’, is not the same as it used to be, (30-40 yrs. ago), as it is today, it should be called, Peppermint Chocolate Chip .
It was called “Mint” Ice Cream, because it was a blend of two mints, (Spearmint oil & Peppermint oil), not just one ‘mint’, all by its self,(as-in, just Peppermint oil), as it is commonly used these days .
When looking to buy “Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream”, I’m expecting the taste of the blended mints ice cream, and chocolate chips , YUM. . . But NOT, the taste of just peppermint, and chocolate chips . . . Blegh .

So, with that, what I’d like to know, is WHO is still making True, (as described above), “Mint” Ice Cream, & “Mint” Chocolate Chip Ice Cream in 2024 ? !

Do you, or, anyone else, have an answer ?

  • This could be my inner texas talking but not even trying blue bell mint chip is crazy. I get it isn’t sold in California. Still, a short expedition to Arizona or Nevada to try their takes on the ice cream flavors yall have made lists about, considering it’s what seems like death-grip on the southern ice cream market, seems reasonable.
