Here’s the Scoop on the 7 Best Strawberry Ice Creams

You know, I don’t often order strawberry ice cream, but that might change after this taste test. A good strawberry ice cream feels wholly refreshing, and it’s one of those foods that has a tangy sharpness my palate craves. Sometimes you forget that you really, really like a food just because you haven’t had it in a while. For me, that was the case with strawberry ice cream.

When we set out to find the best strawberry ice cream, we were looking for two things: A high quality, creamy, smoothly textured base, and a strawberry flavor that’s tart, fresh, and fruity. If those two things were done well, then it made this list. Some people are turned off by chunks of berry and grainy seeds strawberry ice cream can contain, so I tried to make note of which brands have chunks and which don’t. But personally, I love that added texture and authentic fruit taste. Whatever your preference, we’ve got something for you. Dig into this sweet list:

Best of the Best

Tillamook Oregon Strawberry Ice Cream

Tillamook consistently comes in near the top of our rankings because their products are wonderfully buttery, fatty, and delicious. It’s the type of ice cream you can savor longingly with a spoon in your mouth and your eyes shut like a true food pervert. Its superior creaminess fills your mouth with clean, delicious dairy flavor.. It also has a profound tang, delightful tartness, and nice chunks of strawberry. Tillamook scored excellent marks among all of us because this ice cream is just so damn good. Sometimes, we don’t have a clear cut Best of the Best winner. That wasn’t the case during this taste test.

Best Strawberry Flavor

Häagen-Dazs Strawberry Ice Cream

Häagen-Dazs has the most pure and delicious strawberry flavor of the bunch. It’s got a bit of tang and those crunchy little strawberry seeds that add some welcomed texture. You’ll only find five ingredients listed on this carton: Cream, skim milk, strawberries, cane sugar, and egg yolks. It’s pure, creamy, and mouthwatering. Of all the ice creams listed here, this one tastes the most like fresh strawberries. Some people find that seedy, crunchy strawberry texture to be off-putting though, so this one came in just a hair behind Tillamook.

Best Cones

Cool Haus Farmer’s Market Strawberry Ice Cream Cones

Damn, I really dig these. I love nothing more than a prepackaged ice cream cone. It’s weird, because neither the ice cream nor the cone here are truly exceptional, but somehow the combination is really delightful. The ice cream is deliciously buttery, features big ol’ nuggets of white chocolate, and maintains a quality strawberry flavor without grainy chunks of strawberries. There’s something wonderful about pre-packaged treats like this, and, hey, it’ll probably keep you from taking down an entire pint of ice cream by yourself.

Best Light Ice Cream

Halo Top Strawberry Ice Cream

An entire pint of this ice cream has just 270 calories and I think that’s a miracle. It’s super fluffy and delicious, almost like a sherbert, but still contains enough milk fat to get by as an ice cream. No need for the high fat content. Why not enjoy fruit for what it is?! The texture is incredible, and when it comes to strawberries, I actually think less is more. That said, you could add some fresh strawberries to this and have a deliciously light and fresh snack while still getting your ice cream fix.

Best Budget

Great Value Strawberry Ice Cream

Products made by Walmart’s house brand are consistently cheap and flavorful. The price of this ice is so good for what you get. What I like about cheap ice cream is that even if it’s made with ingredients like corn syrup, it still tastes deliciously sweet and fatty. This is a prime example of an ice cream that’s cheap as hell but still has that signature strawberry tartness. What I do find odd is that the label says “may contain traces of almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, coconut, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts, and peanuts.” That’s every type of nut—how on earth is that possible?

Best Tangy

Signature Select Strawberry Ice Cream

Signature Select has a specific tang that not everybody was into, but I’m going to bat for this strawberry ice cream. It’s really sharp, and has the vibe of a dessert made with sour cream. I actually like the aftertaste of this one. It also has the brightest, pinkest color of the bunch, and contains pieces of strawberry. This might not be for everyone, but if you’re like me and value tartness, you’ll enjoy it.

Best Fluffy

Edy’s/Dreyer’s Strawberry Ice Cream

This is tart, creamy, and yet still light. Edy’s/Dreyer’s (depending on which side of the Rockies you live on) strawberry ice cream feels whipped. It’s less of an ice cream and more like a dessert one of your aunts would put in a Tupperware container and bring to a picnic. No complaints from me—I love your aunt. There’s not much by way of strawberry flavor, and no real seeds or big chunks of strawberries either. It’s more of a homogeneous, vaguely strawberry-flavored ice cream. That’s not to say it’s bad, though. It’s just a bit different.

  • I used to avoid freezer section fruit ice-creams like the plague growing up because it was one of two options:

    1. Bland vanilla with uncomfortably icy frozen fruit
    2. Homogenous Nes-Quik style fruit flavor

Tillamook has changed that entirely. I don’t know how Tillamook makes fruit ice-cream so gosh darn tasty, but they do.

  • Blue Bell’s Homemade Vanilla with Strawberries is amazing. Their actual Strawberry ice cream isn’t that noteworthy, but the first I mentioned is fantastic. It didn’t get evaluated here, or I think it would have surpassed a couple. Tillamook’s is a great flavor though…definitely fantastic!

  • I read ‘food pervert’ in the first portion of the article and said to myself, “Wow, I hope Danny Palumbo wrote this,” and was so grateful when I scrolled back up to see his name. Thanks Danny!
