There are few things more annoying than opening a fresh box of cereal, enjoying a few bowls, and then struggling to close the bag. Folding the top over rarely works as well as it should and those little plastic clips have a funny way of disappearing when they’re needed most. Before long, the cereal is back in the cupboard with its bag barely hanging on.

Well, Cheerios has finally decided to tackle this breakfast problem. The brand is teaming up with Ziploc to introduce Cheerios with Ziploc Pantry Seal, a new packaging option that gives the bag inside a cereal box a resealable closure.

Cheerios Is Finally Fixing A Problem Cereal Lovers Know Too Well

Cheerios is teaming up with Ziploc to introduce Cheerios with Ziploc Pantry Seal, a new packaging option that puts a resealable bag inside the familiar cardboard cereal box. The first varieties to get the upgrade are Original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, with the product becoming available exclusively at Walmart.com on October 27th, before expanding to retailers nationwide in the coming months.

According to Cheerios, the company receives hundreds of thousands of requests, comments, and reactions about cereal packaging every year. The brand also says that 90% of cereal lovers take extra steps to keep their cereal fresh, whether that means folding the bag, rolling it down, or using a clip. That’s a lot of people trying to fix the same problem!

The complaints aren’t new, either. A 2021 report from Packaging Strategies discussed how consumers were calling for resealable cereal bags, with social media users sharing their frustrations and suggesting ways manufacturers could improve the packaging.

How Does Cheerios With Ziploc Pantry Seal Work?

The new packaging keeps the familiar cardboard cereal box but gives the bag inside a resealable closure. It’s designed to open only partially across the top, creating a handy spout for pouring cereal into a bowl. Once breakfast is over, the bag can be sealed again rather than folded, rolled, or held together with a clip.

This design should make pouring easier. Anyone who’s accidentally poured half a bowl of cereal onto the kitchen counter knows that a little extra control can go a long way.

The cereal itself isn’t changing. Original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios will keep their familiar flavors, so fans won’t have to worry about a recipe change coming with the new packaging.

Other Cereal Brands Should Pay Attention

Cheerios might be among the first big names to make this particular move, but it probably won’t be the last cereal brand to face questions about resealable packaging.

Just think about how many cereal boxes get opened and closed throughout the week. A box of Lucky Charms might sit in the cupboard between breakfasts. Frosted Flakes might be opened by several family members throughout the day. Other cereals might be eaten by the handful as snacks rather than poured into a bowl. All of them could benefit from packaging that’s easier to close.

Remember, Cheerios with Ziploc Pantry Seal will be available exclusively at Walmart.com starting October 27, 2026. The company plans to expand availability to retailers nationwide in the coming months.
