Over the past few months, King’s Hawaiian has been quietly innovating beyond their classic dinner rolls and buns. Back in May, I tried the new SPAM Dog on the equally new King’s Hawaiian hot dog buns. (I would have bet money King’s Hawaiian already sold hot dog buns, but they assured me the concept was new.) Today, I’ve got my hands on a brand-new snackable bread concept: King’s Hawaiian Shake Em’ Bites. The debut flavor for this idea is a Minions-approved “Bananaaa!” flavored sugar. Starting your product line with an IP collaboration is brave; let’s see if these bites can exceed their despicable origin.

King’s Hawaiian Bananaaa! Shake Em’ Bites Review
King's Hawaiian Shake 'Em Bites - Bananaaa!

New King’s Hawaiian Snack!

Pros: Folks, this doesn’t happen often. I opened my first tub, shook in the banana-flavored sugar as described, and before I knew it, the tub was gone. My roommates and had eaten the entire tub… before I took any detailed tasting notes. So, for the sake of transparency, I was sent a tub for my reviewing purposes, but it wasn’t the tub I actually reviewed for this piece.

If that wasn’t proof enough, let me state it plainly: King’s Hawaiian Bananaaa! Shake ‘Em Bites are very good. Of course they are! Bite-sized Hawaiian bread rolls freshly tossed in sugar is a winning idea from top to bottom. The flavored sugar adds a great texture to every bite, and the addition of that banana flavor doesn’t hurt either.

Cons: I’m a longtime enjoyer of artificial banana flavoring, but some of my guinea pigs weren’t as sold on the idea. That said, those same guinea pigs all admitted the base concept of “Hawaiian bread bites plus flavored sugar” was an absolute winner; it was just this particular flavor that didn’t win them over. I’m looking forward to the inevitable cinnamon sugar version of these.

The instructions do note that the bites should be eaten within 45 minutes of sugar-shaking for the best experience, which I’ll cosign. The sugar coating dissolves into a sticky-sweet layer of moisture if you wait too long to eat these. If there’s any significant flaw with this concept, it’s the sub-hour timer ticking down on a container that’s supposed to hold 4 servings.
