I’m familiar with the concept of reselling. Limited-edition sneakers, concert tickets, collectible cups. Supply and demand, all that jazz. I get it. I’ve participated. But soup? Really?

Not some rare, vintage tin that’s been sitting in someone’s collection for 50 years, either. I’m talking about ordinary canned soup. The kind you’d pick up at the grocery store for a couple of dollars and leave in the pantry until you need it.
Well, we’ve reached a point where people are trying to sell Campbell’s discontinued Cream of Shrimp soup for as much as $200 on eBay.
Two hundred dollars. For soup.
I’m torn between admiring the entrepreneurial spirit and checking the resale value of everything in my pantry.
Why Is Campbell’s Cream Of Shrimp Soup So Expensive?
Campbell’s discontinued its Cream of Shrimp soup in 2025, and some people are taking the news harder than others. Particularly those who’ve been using it in their cooking for years.
But where some people saw a favorite product disappearing from grocery shelves, others saw a business opportunity.
Some eBay sellers are now asking considerably more for cans that once cost around $2.
Individual cans have been listed for $12 to $18, while two-packs have been advertised for around $25 to $35. And if you want to stock up? Twelve-packs have been listed for as much as $200.
That’s an impressive markup for something that used to sit on a grocery shelf alongside Cream of Mushroom and Chicken Noodle.
I know inflation has been rough, but I didn’t realize canned soup had entered the luxury goods market. Of course, these are asking prices, not confirmed sales. Someone can list a can of soup for whatever they like. Whether anyone is willing to part with that much money is another question entirely.
Why Are People So Desperate for Cream of Shrimp Soup?
Now, I can’t say I’ve ever found myself craving a bowl of Cream of Shrimp soup. But for people who grew up with it, the appeal goes beyond the soup itself.
Cream of Shrimp has long been used as an ingredient in casseroles, dips, sauces, and other dishes. Much like Cream of Mushroom or Cream of Chicken, it’s one of those pantry staples that can save you a fair bit of effort in the kitchen.
And when you’ve been making the same family recipe for years, having one of the main ingredients disappear is a bit of a problem. Especially with the holidays coming up.
Imagine telling your family that their favorite Thanksgiving casserole isn’t happening this year because the soup it requires has become a collector’s item. Or worse, that you’ve spent $200 making sure it does happen.
There may still be a few cans floating around in stores, but with production discontinued, whatever’s left won’t last forever. And unless Campbell’s decides to bring the flavor back, fans will eventually have to find another way to make their favorite recipes.
But $200 for a case of soup? That’s where I might have to draw the line.
Although, if anyone happens to have a few forgotten cans of Cream of Shrimp sitting at the back of their pantry, it might be worth having a look at eBay before you open one.
You could be sitting on a small fortune. Or at least someone’s very optimistic idea of one.
