In our book, a brunch on New Year’s morning (or, let’s be real, early afternoon) is essential. We’re not talking about the kind where you have to go to a fancy restaurant and spend loads of cash for an all-you-can-eat spread, while your head’s pounding and you know that you won’t be able to stomach more than a few bites of food. We’re talking about the kind you can host at home, with a few trusted friends, all of whom are sworn to secrecy about those drunk texts you sent last night. Probably should have stuck to those nonalcoholic Champagnes for your NYE toasts, huh? Who are we kidding?

The whole point of this type of brunch is to gently, carefully ease your hangover while surrounded by good company – and to do that, you don’t just need good brunch food. You need good brunch drinks, ones that will both taste great and feel revitalizing. Don’t just settle for the standards; try these actual hangover cures instead.

Espresso Tonic

I like to think of espresso tonic as the sober version of an Espresso Martini (which you don’t have to make from scratch, just FYI: there are some great canned Espresso Martinis out there). To make it, all you do is mix a shot of espresso with some tonic water, pour it over ice, and serve it with an orange slice or your favorite garnish. Aside from feeling incredibly refreshing, the tonic water here helps to rehydrate your body, while the caffeine in the espresso delivers a pick-me-up and combats fatigue. The drink also has a delicious bitterness from both ingredients, but the tonic water also provides a sweet note.

Cucumber Juice

Is any drink more soothing than cucumber juice? We don’t think so. Cucumber juice is soothing, cooling, and hydrating, all in one go, and it’s the perfect balm for when your head’s feeling a little sore. It’s also slightly simpler than other green juices, which can feel like a lot of work on a hangover. Cucumber juice doesn’t just replenish your body through its H2O content, either: Cucumbers have a high electrolyte content, which aids hydration and which will bring you back to earth quicker than regular water. Serve it over a bunch of ice, and with a cucumber round wedged on top of the glass.

Ginger-Lime Tea

I can usually deal with tiredness and a headache when I’m hungover, but when it starts to affect my stomach, it’s game over. That’s when ginger-lime tea comes to the rescue. This tea, which can be easily brewed at home in just a couple of minutes, has a settling effect on the belly that will stop you from spending the rest of the day next to the toilet. Ginger’s also an anti-inflammatory, which can aid any headaches or other rogue pains, and the water in the tea will also help to make up for all of that liquid you lost the night before. You can even serve it cold, if hot tea’s not your thing, and you don’t have to make it from scratch, either. Just buy one of the best ginger teas, and add some lime.
