Buc-ee’s is so much more than a mere gas station and convenience store. I mean, it has a cult-like following for a reason (and those Beaver Nuggets aren’t the only road trip snack fans rave about). It’s one of the best spots to stop and grab a bite and a break when you’re hitting the road for hours… or maybe just want to experience what it is about Buc-ee’s that’s make it so beloved.

But, if you’ve never visited a Buc-ee’s or tried its many snacks before, it’s easy to wind up overwhelmed. More importantly, it’s easy to make simple mistakes — mistakes that could make the experience less than incredible. So, take note and make sure you avoid these all-too-classic beginner Buc-ee’s mistakes when you roll into the one-of-a-kind rest stop.

Lingering (or Parking!) at the Pumps

Plenty of Buc-ee’s visitors stop by to not only visit the store itself, but also fuel up their vehicles. While it’s tempting to pull up to one of the gas pumps, fill up, and then head inside, that’s a beginner mistake.

It’s considered rude to take up a gas pump while you’re taking your time enjoying all that Buc-ee’s has to offer inside. So, only park at the pump and leave your car empty if you’re paying inside for gas. Otherwise, you should fill up, then move into a regular parking spot to do your snack shopping. 

Settling for Packaged Brisket

When you visit Buc-ee’s for the first time, you need to try one item: the famous brisket. Specifically, the brisket sandwich is a standout item, so much so that it has a lengthy list of fans who know exactly how to order it, when to stop by to pick it up, and all the different forms it’s available in. Plus, it’s Buc-ee’s best-selling item.

But don’t make the mistake of settling for any packaged brisket sandwich you see for sale when you arrive at Buc-ee’s. Beginners often grab what’s available pre-wrapped in the hot box. However, you’ll get a better-tasting sandwich and hot brisket if you wait until the meat is fresh.

Head to the barbecue station inside Buc-ee’s, and hang out until there’s fresh brisket available to buy. You can either order a freshly-made brisket sandwich from the counter or simply wait until the announcement is made in-store that fresh brisket is available. Skipping the Free Samples

Entering Buc-ee’s for the first time can be overwhelming, because the stores have an absolutely massive amount of items to browse. In addition to exclusive merch emblazoned with the Buc-ee’s famous beaver, there’s also a wealth of snacks and treats to choose from. But as a first-timer, you don’t want to make the mistake of simply grabbing whatever looks interesting.

There are a few staple items that Buc-ee’s customers absolutely love, so it’s best to start with these surefire snacks. First up? Skip all of the chocolate-covered treats and candies in favor of some savory items: Specifically, the jerky.

The jerky isn’t just good — you can sample it before you buy, making it an excellent way to taste-test snacks before choosing them. You can try every single jerky option, which means it’s easy to find one that you genuinely like (and maybe haven’t tried before).

Next up, you’ll want to try the fudge. Buc-ee’s also offers free samples of every fudge flavor, so make sure to spend some time testing options before settling on any package.

Sticking With Traditional Gas Station Snacks

While Buc-ee’s is technically a regular ol’ convenience store paired with a gas station (I mean, it’s not, but it also is), first-time visitors shouldn’t simply assume that traditional gas station snacks are all that’s available. The store itself is massive, and inside you’ll find a wealth of options — like that famous brisket, jerky, and fudge — so you don’t want to settle for average.

Instead of picking up chips, drinks, and candies you can find anywhere else, beginners should try some of Buc-ee’s exclusives. 

For example, you can grab kolaches, a traditional Czech pastry that comes in both sweet and savory forms. Beaver Nuggets, a crunchy corn nugget you’ll find only at Buc-ee’s, are another staple you’ll want to try. And, like I mentioned above, both the fudge and jerky are great options, especially since you can try them before buying. Don’t have time? You can find multipacks featuring as many as 24 different flavors for a prepackaged spin on sampling.

Alternatively, you can pick up heartier options, too. During breakfast, there are brisket-laden options, sausage on a stick choices, and so much more. Feeling like you just need a little heat? Candied jalapeños are something you certainly won’t find at other convenience stores. So, first-timers should live a little and make a point to try some of Buc-ee’s specialties.
