I love Costco with my whole heart. Even so, I’m not above admitting that no matter how hard they try, they have the ability to stock their aisles with a few duds. Thankfully that can be remedied with their iron-clad return policy, but I generally try to not take advantage of that too often. Save yourself the hassle by just following this handy guide that’s filled with four Costco foods we love and four that are better off left on the shelf.

Love: Kirkland Signature Cheese Pizza
The classics are there for a reason. It’s incredibly easy to mess up a cheese pizza, but Costco really does theirs justice. The crust is crispy, the cheese is thick, the sauce is sweet, and it’s available in a four-pack. That means you’ll get at least half a week’s worth of pizza out of the deal!
Leave: Food Court Rotisserie Chicken Chef Salad
Naturally one food in the Costco food court had to be the worst but we didn’t expect it to be the rotisserie chicken chef salad. The chicken in this salad is bad. It looks raw―far from the juicy, bountiful chicken you’d expect when you’re sold on it being rotisserie style. You’re 100% better off grabbing a $1.50 hot dog combo while you’re there.
Love: Kirkland Signature Brut Champagne
Costco’s Kirkland Signature Brut Champagne is proof that they really can do even the finer things true justice. It’s toasty, a little lemony, and wonderfully effervescent. You can grab a bottle for under $30, so pop away!
Leave: Kevin’s Natural Foods Korean BBQ-Style Beef
Kevin’s generally gets a bad rap among Costco fans. While there are some of their meals that I will go to bat for (particularly the Hawaiian chicken) I will agree that there are some stinkers to be found among the aisles of Costco. In our taste test of Kevin’s meals, we just weren’t impressed by the Korean BBQ-style foods that they’re putting out into the world. This one’s a big skip for us.
Love: Kirkland Chocolate Cake Filled with Chocolate Mousse
We love Costco’s chocolate cake so much that we’ll take pretty much any excuse to grab a fresh one while we’re there. Is there a birthday coming up? Well obviously we need one for that. Did your kid pass their math test? Sure, it may have been a D+ but it’s still cause for celebration! It’s moist, it’s chocolatey, and it’s going in the cart.
Leave: Real Good Food Lightly Breaded Chicken Strips
This one’s a little divisive. Real Good Food’s breaded chicken strips are gluten and grain free. So if you need to eat that sort of diet then by all means, they’re not half bad chicken strips. I, however, am not. These just aren’t worth grabbing when we live in a world, and Costco, where Just Bare lightly breaded chicken breast chunks exist.
Love: Kirkland Signature Garlic Butter Shrimp
Admittedly it is hard to mess up shrimp that’s drenched in garlic butter. This shrimp from Costco has a lot of other things going for it in addition to this exemplary choice. The shrimp is nice and firm, even out of the microwave. There’s enough to do some serious heavy lifting in even the biggest of parties you may be putting together. It just delivers a dang luxurious experience!
Leave: Any Fruit From Costco
Okay, this is a general catch-all so it feels like a cop-out. It’s not my fault that it applies to pretty much any fruit you can find at Costco! I don’t necessarily blame them. While they might be able to do something to avoid the general issue, there’s just a lot of things stacked against the fruit at Costco. Bringing fruit in by the pallet is pretty chaotic to start with. Then you have to factor in the amount of fruit that you’ll have to eat once you bring it home to get to the end before it goes bad. It’s just not a recipe for success. We recommend always skipping this one.
