Aldi Customers’ ‘Controversial’ Opinions Are What We’re All Thinking

It can be very vindicating when someone has the same opinion as you, especially if you consider that opinion to be a little left-field. The magic of the internet, though, is that it connects like-minded people – and then, all of a sudden, you realise that firmly held belief that you thought was a unique stance and thought is actually very common. Yes, this can create community. Understanding. A sense of camaraderie. But it can also remind you that…maybe you’re not so different after all.

We saw this in full force a few days ago, when a thread on the Aldi Reddit page asked people what their controversial hot takes were – and it turns out that most of us feel the same way. 

Guess We’re All Thinking The Same Thing, Huh? 

In the Reddit thread, the poster posed the question, “What’s your Aldi hot take that would put you in Patrick’s situation?” accompanied by a picture of Patrick from SpongeBob, chained to the floor in the middle of an arena, defiantly. The original poster stated that their own hot take was that Aldi’s bagged deli meat wasn’t that bad – “not deli counter quality, but perfectly fine on sandwiches.”

This is, admittedly, a bit more of a contentious take than others – but some of the responses in the thread were perhaps not. One person, who said that “the aisle of shame that everybody loves is full of Temu quality product,” received more than 2,000 upvotes, seemingly in confirmation. This thought was also reiterated several times in other comments throughout the thread (hey, it’s a great place to get a tent or an air fryer you didn’t know you needed, but it’s hard to deny that…yeah…it’s hardly premium quality stuff a lot of the time). Another person said “You can buy fruit, just expect some of it to go bad,” which received a chorus of assenting responses. Criticism of some of its Aldi Finds and its jarred pasta sauces also got a lot of agreement – and people have been saying that the latter are bad for a good few years now.

So…Any Really Controversial Stuff In There?

Well, the person who said that they didn’t like Aldi’s peanut butter cups may be the top contender for a truly controversial opinion. The comment received a flurry of disagreements, mostly in .gif form. “I knew the townsfolk were coming for me for this one,” the commenter later said – and they were right. 

Another person said that Aldi should remove the aisle of shame in its entirety, which also struck us as genuinely contentious. Yes, it might be full of stuff you don’t really need, but it’s all part of the experience, right? Where else can you run off to when your partner’s taking too long picking out what they want for dinner, for you to stare absent-mindedly at cat scratchers and unsightly oven gloves?
